Is it not obvious, his talent and intellect are the written word. I do not mean to be rude, but he was a man with an extremely high IQ. He was well educated, so one should assume his intelligence was very diverse.

Actually an interesting question since Poe possessed a highly inquisitive analytical mind for science and theory as well as an extremely sensitive, inutitive intelligence to create a highly musical poetry and works of extraordinary imagination. Usually a mind like that is suited to great works of music. Poe centered on poetic language. He had a great wit, poorly shown sometimes in humorous attempts in short stories. He was highly progressive and imaginative, inventing widely popular ways to enliven a magazine(the puzzle feature, the attack review, the hoax). He was exceptional at school in language arts, naturally. His West Point pals would look to him to write humorous parodies of teachers. He mastered all his wide learning and resources to lend depth to all his writings, no matter how trivial. A unique genius, sometimes lacking worldly sense and stability, but on the whole a special balance dedicated wholly to literature.
