Halden and Baekkelaget started out the leg just seconds apart.

If things hold to form, the race for 3rd will be contested by several teams close together some 9-10.5 minutes behind the 2 Norwegian leaders (Halden and Baekelagets).

Delta, Pohjantähti, IKHP, Turun Metsäkävijät, and TuS will have to fight over the scraps. Ronneby is about another 3 minutes behind them, the OK Orion.

Who has the best sprint I wonder? Hopefully teams pick a fast sprinter to run this anchor leg.

Now into the 10th leg, at the 6th control, Björnar Valstad is up by 25 seconds over Halden's Kjetil Björlo.

Sometimes I get the feeling I'm the only person in Tucson following the Tio-Mila! It's kind of spooky.

Near the halfway point in the 10th leg, Halden and Baekkelaget are together again. Delta appears to have separated itself from the other teams vying for 3rd, now 8:40 back.

Turun Met is 11:45 behind and IKHP 12:00 behind the lead.

Lidingo has a definite chance to get into the top 10, I think with Johan Nasman on their anchor leg. Officials are moving the radio controls around to follow the leaders, so there are fewer reports now on the teams behind.

At 8.8km into this leg, IKHP has moved into 4th, 12:25 behind the lead (Delta has established itself in 3rd at this point). However, a group of 3 (TuS, Pohj., and Orion) follow together just 25 seconds behind IKHP.

Farther up the course, Halden and Baekkelaget are still together. There will be no more forking all the way to the finish, so its a real tactical battle. Who has the most?

...AND THE WINNER IS...

Baekkelaget!!!

The rain has just started to fall on the first finishers.

Apparently Halden made a mistake by the 22nd control and dropped to 40 seconds behind. Exhaustion was probably a big factor. There would have been no forking to the control. For much of the 10th leg it appeared that Valstad's pace was simply too much for Björlo to maintain consistently. Baekk. would get a bit of a lead from time to time and Halden would have to work their way back. It had to "give" at some point.

Final results should be posted to http://www.tiomila.se/2001/herr10.asp sometime.

Meanwhile, here are the top finishers I could find...

  1. Baekkelaget
  2. Halden
  3. DELTA
  4. Orion
  5. Turun Suunnistajat
  6. IKHP
  7. SK Pohjantähti Oulu
  8. Turun Metsäkävijät
  9. Ronneby
  10. Lidingö

...I think I'll go get some sleep.
