Our left wing 'problem'

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

It's been a long standing issue now and I'm amazed at how long we've played with an un-balanced formation.

I hope Bobby will be using some of his summer transfer kitty to rectify this and the following guy would more than do a job. I've seen him play 3 times on Sky and he's a (good day) Solano on the left, get your purse out Bobby!

>> Chelsea's Danish winger Jesper Gronkjaer has joined the growing band of players to state his unhappiness with life at Stamford Bridge. After a week where some of the club's senior professionals like Marcel Desailly and Gustavo Poyet have let their feeling known about their despondency with life at Stamford Bridge, one of the younger brigade from abroad has also said he is not happy spending time on the bench. Gronkjaer, who was boss Claudio Ranieri's first signing when he paid Ajax £7.8million for the 23-year-old last year, made an immediate impact at the club, scoring twice in the Blues' FA Cup win at Gillingham, and then turning in outstanding performances in Premiership games against Newcastle and Manchester United. However, he has been dissatisfied with only playing a substitutes role over the past couple of months. Speaking after playing for Denmark in Wednesday night's 3-0 victory over Slovenia, where he scored his first international goal, Gronkjaer said: "Of course I realised that it would not be easy gaining a first-team place at Chelsea, because they have so many world-class players. "But once I made an impression I was not expecting to spend so much time as a substitute." He added: "It's a mystery to me why I am not being picked, I am fit, but the coach has not given me any reason why. I don't start matches and it's very frustrating."

Can't quite work out the price Chewsee paid. I got an "A" with a hat on and a pound sign. What's that in ponds, shillings and pence? (or guineas/Guiness if you like).

Not a bad player from the limited viewing on Sky. Mind, Sooper Ken looked aalreet last season.

You were right first time Screacher....darn it, the details of my new job are revealed already......new strike for Wycombe Wanderers with an eye to the immediate step up to the Premiership with a glorious return of the sheet-metal workers son from Gosforth Tallymans son from Heaton for a new British Record fee.

Waht do you mean, my performance at Regents Park doesn't bearout such a move....huh....I'll have you know that I was being devious on that occassion and trying to lull that Makem on the next 'pitch' into a sense of true false security!

LOL!

There was a piece about Anne Robinson on one of those entertainment news shows last night. She's claiming to have been afraid one of the contestants was going to headbutt her after being voted off. In actuality, that particular contestant, imo, was one of the best one's they've had on the American version. Most are annoying, whiny Americans or just boring. This one saw the humour and began giving it back to Anne, then while taking the walk of shame gave Anne a bit of attitude. It was hilarious!

Howay folks, do you always have to make a decent thread topic degenerate into stupidity !!!!

Sorry if I'm getting arsy, but 9 out of 10 threads seem to turn into this kind of chuff. Some of us want to talk about football.

So this Gronkjaer fella - 7.8 million is a lot of cash. Can't see us paying more than 5 million for anyone these days. If we could poach him for that much then he'd be a smashing purchase. Still say Glass was worth a decent try...

Gronkjaer looks top-class Nick - lightning fast and can play on either wing. He looked to have great potential in Euro2000, and we should have grabbed him then.

Right now, I think he's just trying to push his own claims at Chewsee, and would be very surprised if they let him leave. If they did they'd want at least £10 million for him, which I'm afraid excludes the Toon.

All the talk over the weekend was about this Sikora lad, but also there were some links to Djhalmina who plays in Spain. Temperamental left winger who has fallen out with his coach and is available. His price is in the £10 miilion pound bracket.

Since the rise of New Labour there is no effective left wing presence. The mold of 'old' Labour ideologists such as Michael Foot, Tony Benn and Dennis Skinner had been broken by 1995 with the new politics of Thatcherite free market and deregulation. The revolution that was thought of as Marxist socialist only ground was swept away by the truly revolutionary laissez faire policies of the early Thatcher / Lawson years. By 1990...

Oh...not that left wing problem...hmmmm

According to icNewcsatle:-

Forgotten man Stephen Glass made a successful return to the Newcastle United side against Leicester City and insisted: "I want to stay here."

But the Scottish international accepts he is rapidly running out of time in his bid to stay at St James's Park.

Bobby Robson says that there are still decisions to be made over certain players - including Glass.

But the left winger's contract expires at the end of the season and as there have been no talks about a new one Glass has every right to feel he is on his way along with fellow Scot Kevin Gallacher, Daniel Cordone, Des Hamilton and Carl Serrant.

Some players say they want to stay at clubs because it is politically correct to do so and it also keeps the fans off their back.

However, Glass is genuine when he says: "I don't want to leave Newcastle United. But obviously I am running out of time the way things are at the moment."

With Nobby Solano still suspended for tomorrow night's game with Southampton at St James's Park Glass is again likely to get the vote from Bobby Robson to give United some much-needed width, all-be-it on the left.

But Solano is available for Saturday's trip to Liverpool and Glass is under pressure to produce the goods tomorrow in front of Robson who missed Saturday's win because he was scouting in Holland.

Adds Glass: "All I can do is to keep my head down and give 100 per cent all the time. But at least I have been given another chance.

"To tell the truth I thought I had played my last game for Newcastle the way things have been going.

"And I was surprised and delighted when the manager said I was playing against Leicester City because it was a chance to do well."

Before Saturday Glass lasted tasted Premiership action back on September 6 Ñ when United won at Coventry City to go to the top of the Premiership for the first time in four seasons.

No wonder Glass says: "Things have changed a bit both for me and the team since that night at Coventry. I hurt my calf at Highfield Road and that injury kept me out for a while.

"But there must have been other reasons why I have been out for long."

The Chronicle revealed on Saturday night that Rangers had watched Glass in action in United's last two Reserve games and that he could have the chance to play Champions League football next season.

Under the Bosman Ruling Rangers could pick up Glass for nothing - after Kenny Dalglish paid £600,000 for him in the summer of 1998
