Question - Beardo or Gazza?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Me and a couple of mates were talking about this in the pub last night. You can take either Beardo in his prime or Gazza in his prime to form part of your team which one would you choose. Two of us are toon fans the other two supported Sheff Utd and Hibs. Us toons fans said Beardo every time, where as the other two said Gazza, claiming he had more skill, and trickery. It was claimed by other two that us NUFC supporters were biased because of all the top stuff beardo did for us, where Gazza's most memorable moment for NUFC was getting his nuts crunched by Vinnie Jones.

Has to be Beardsley. Gazza was a great talent, but he pi$$ed it up against a wall, knacked himself constantly, has appaling taste in friends, abused his wife, put on 20 stone and nearly caused WW3 in Glasgow.

Pedro on the other hand was proof of God. To be fair.

Gazza. Look at the prices being paid for truly world class creative midfielders; Figo, Zidane etc. Gazza in his prime was their equal.

Ah, but Gazza had about 3 years of prime before becoming average. Beardsley kept on producing the goods time and time again. His goal against Brighton...just wonderful.

When I was mid 20s I played 5-a-sde every week. For a while I impersonated Waddle, hands on hips, weary with world, lazily beating players (in my head). Then I was Beardsley up on my toes, stepping over the ball, non stop action, a very intelligent player bringing others into the game.

Then Gazza came along. Just different class. I could never see what he did to beat players. He was perfect.

Beardsley was absolutely fantastic, just Gazza was better.

To be classed as a truly great player you have to have many attributes one of which is temperament. Looking back at Gazza's career at regular intervals he showed that he hasn't got the correct temperament.

Sure, players have to have an edge but not like that. Cup Final 1991, Gazza should have been sent off for the lunge on Parker and if he hadn't knackered himself in the Charles tackle he would have been sent off.

Question was Gazza at prime v Beardsley at time, not career average.

Career average has Nicky Butt higher than George Best.

Well! Since I was at the debuts of both Gazza and Beardsley (just wanted to add that) I would have to say pedro was far and away a more productive team member. Gazza had his sublime moments, granted, however Pedro just did everything well, he tackled, he created, he scord amazing goals, he was a true gent, a class above anything else. His goal against Brighton was just amazing, I remember it well as I stood in the gallowgate thinking how the feck did he do that.

Gazza's prime? Probably his 1990 World Cup from which everything went slowly downhill.

Most memorable moment of that World Cup? Gazza crying after being suspended when a place in the final beckoned!

All of the above is exactly what we were saying in the pub. We decided to ignore all of the arguments against Gazza, ie, his 'off the field activities' and basically how he could have been up there with best if he hadn't wasted his talent, and concentrated on just the playing side of things. Yes, beardsley is fantastic, and his whole attitude puts Gazza to shame, but (and I think it's been mentioned before) Gazza could do things no one else could. Waddle had his, well waddle and beardo's little drop of the shoulder worked every time. Basically you knew what these guys were going to do, but opposing players would be powerless to stop it. I think Gazza had a bigger bag of tricks, and you just didn't know what he was going to try next. Remember the sublime cross to give David Platt his goal agains Belgium when it looked like we were going out of the 1990 World Cup? Beckham - Take note that is how a ball should be played.

Sorry - I want them both. Wouldn't it have been fantastic for them both to play for Toon in their primes? Ahh, dream on Screach.

I remember at Southampton seeing Gazza for the first time, Willie Mcfail took him off with three minutes to go just so he could have his own ovation, so many tricks. However, Gazza got suspended after scowing at QPR's Paul Parker & was suspended against high flying Oxford (yes them) & in came Ian Bogie. He had the same attitude bossed the midfield & oozed class, playing with his chest oot, Gazza Style. "We can survive without Gazza my Dad told me" (he's normally a great judge of a player), Gazza left for Spurz, Bogie played about three decent games after that & went to Port Vale & we went down.

The point? NUFC survived Beardo but not without Gazza.
