Search for coconut-stricken monkey is called off

Police and vets in Thailand have called off the search for a monkey that got its head stuck in a coconut.

The animal escaped to the jungle near the resort of Bang Saen during the first attempt by villagers to free it.

Teams of volunteers have been searching for the pig-tail monkey since February.

Pisit na Patalung, director general of the Thailand Zoological Park Organisation, told Ananova local police had called off the search.

He said: "My vet and local forestry officers visited the site but could not locate this monkey.

"It is presumed the monkey would have dislodged the coconut on its own."
