Shearer's last operation?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

"It's the last operation he can have on his knee anyway. But at least now is a good time for him to have it. It will be four or five months before he can play again.

So if Shearer does have an operation and he breaks down again it's pretty much the end of the road for Alan Shearer.

My "Window Cleaner at St James'park" contact reckons that NUFC have contacted their insurance company to see about claiming the insurance on Shearer as he'll never play again.

Bobby Robson's vacant 'Assistant Manager' post filled for next season?

The popular opinion seems to be that Dr Steadman is the only man that can save Shearer's career so at least he is finally getting the correct diagnosis.

Mind you even Steadman had no complaints about the surgery that took place at Xmas.

I hope he makes a full recovery, we need him.

I don't understand this quotation on the impending operation being AS's last throw of dice. Why would this be the case? His operation in December was, I believe, the first on his left knee. The cruciate ligament injury he had was to his right knee.

The only thing I can think of is that a severely damaged piece of the tendon joining the hamstring muscle to his knee was cut out. This must have shortened the tendon, and presumably any further need to repair the same tendon could be problemmatical.

Regarding insurance, I actually doubt he's insured for all that much. It depends on how the player is valued, but I have doubts that he will be insured at 'market or replacement value' as the premiums would be massive. He may only be insured for his present 'book value', that is his value on the Balance Sheet. The way players assets are valued in the financial statements, I doubt Shearer's book value is more a few million, perhaps £3-5 million.

are you saying you wouldn't take $5 million for shearer right now?

this is the last throw of the dice because if it doesn't work out nobody has a clue what to do next.

i think shearer has been "finished" for a good few months but he's battled the pain. if the op isn't a 100% success i hope he has the sense to pack it in. worst case would be a repeat of this season.

I was simply pointing out, George, that if anyone is expecting a £15 million insurance pay-off, if he is indeed finished, then I don't see that occurring.

I think you raise a very valid concern - if we go forward assuming Shearer will be fully fit and scoring 20 odd goals next season, and he doesn't make it then we could be in real trouble.

This is undoubtedly a very difficult assessment to make at this juncture, and I assume they will seek guidance from Dr. Steadman as to the chances of him making a full recovery.

Interested in the points made re Alan by GB and Clark`y , I would not question Dr Steadman`s findings or recomendations , all I can say from what little experience I have had is if he makes a full recovery injury wise , there will still be a problem in his head to overcome, Henrik Larsen appears to have cracked it, Michael Mols I doubt, been given the all clear injury wise will just be 80% of the package.

Nah - there's always amputation. OK, sorry. I didn't mean it. Clarky makes a good point. At this stage, we have no idea if Shearer will ever play again. On the basis that we have Cort, Gallacher, Ameobi, Lua x2 and Coppy (one sub appearance?) as strikers with EPL experience, the future doesn't look too bright without AS. Oh sorry, I forgot about LKD. But not as a striker.
