MI - Power line failure causes area outages

Wednesday, April 25, 2001

An underground power line failed at a Detroit Edison plant in Superior Township on Tuesday, blowing a manhole cover into the air and creating service glitches in the area.

The failure caused a loud noise and a flash of light that was reported as an explosion at the plant, at First and Superior streets, shortly after 7:30 p.m."They said it was a big explosion," said Superior Township Fire Capt. Ron Smith, whose department went to the plant after the call. "It rumbled the area. It didn't blow out any windows or anything, but it woke them up."

Many Detroit Edison customers experienced momentary power outages as automatic equipment switched them to other lines.

"They did have a loss of electricity. Some of them for a matter of seconds; some for a little bit longer as the equipment makes those changes," said Carl Just, a spokesman for Detroit Edison.

Just said a cable failed at the station, but Detroit Edison crews are not sure why. He also said the failure would've caused the loud noise and even a flash of light witnesses might have interpreted as an explosion.

Smith said there were no injuries reported, and his firefighters could find no visible damage to the plant.
