Couldn't shake(though he talk very little directly about personal tragedies)deaths of parents, brother, friends,Virginia. Had some sense of horror as a sensitive child. His real dark side was being somewhat proud, belligerent, arrogant, poor judge of character, the Imp of the Perverse, not able to take a joke but dishes out criticism as if it couldn't hurt others, naive and a bad judge of dangerous characters, wannabe southern aristocrat and literary lion. Sinned against more than sinning, poverty and disasters(his bad business judgment but creative triumphs made money for everyone else)buried his failings. Anger and breakdown desperation as he fought to survive without Virginia. Generous, kind, brave, courteous and honorable with a keen wit and athletic robustness were his usual attributes among friends and acquaintances. But God help you if you wrote a crummy poem or book. The dark side you are tempted to think about was very much the slanderous myths created by his enemies that persisted until this century studied the truth. The popular sense of both these viewpoints is probably a vague mixture influenced by the deliberate impressions created by his gothic stories added to his personal tragedies. One drink and he would be beside himself, but rarely, if ever, stupid, melancholic or brutal.
