the first egg

Today, while taking care of the chickens I discovered our first egg. Kinda small, more oblong than a "normal" egg and laid in the most inconvenient place possible, but still, the first egg!

Congratulations!!! Do you have any cyber-cigars to pass around? Really, it's a pretty special moment! All your hard work coming to fruition...

Congrats, john!

I agree with sheepish, we need to pass out some cigars.

So, what are you going to name it?

John, I remember the joy of your first (own) egg . Cool . My girls even keep our first ones, prickling holes in them with pins and getting the stuff out of the inside . It's a special time. Thanks for sharing.

TWINNS! I found a second egg today in the same spot. Don't they know what a nesting box is for?!

How exciting! Are your nest boxes secluded enough? My girls all lay in the same few boxes that are the most secluded. They have about 9 others to choose from but will wait in line or even pile on top of each other to use the 2 they like best. They are the ones in the farthest corner. They are sooo funny!

Yahoo john!!! I always think it is so fun when "new girls" start laying. I have nice nest boxes and they all end up using them eventually (although the lineup in the morning for the "favorite", which by the way is the LEAST secluded one,go figure, is long). I really think for a while they are clueless as to when they are going to lay an egg, therein lies the problem. They will "get it" after a while, but in the meantime get used to looking all over for the eggs, some of which will be broken if you have roosts (yes, I have had them lay will roosting).

Ah, you must have "teenagers"... don't want the nesting box.. tee hee

however, it is a great feeling getting the first egg... you almost hate to eat it... and when you do... it tastes the best!!!
