The papers up here are reporting that if Steven Pressley fails a fitness test then Craig Brown will promote Stevie Caldwell from the U-21 squad to the main squad for the forthcoming friendly with Poland.

Obviously didnt watch the U-21 internationla then, cos Gary was different class.

The Caldwell brothers are playing for the U21's tonight aren't they? Good luck to them both.

Go on Steve a couple of good appearances for Scotland against decent opposition may save Bobby a bit of dosh in the summer. If they're good enough and all that.......Steve has the height and the attitude to be the commanding centre half we need.

I saw them play for the U-21s last month. Stevie was completely outclassed, pace, position everything. He only improved when Gary got rid of his nerves and ran the show defensivle in the second half. Shame they don't have each others builds.

It's intriguing. Gullit put Gary straight in to train with the seniors yet Bobby gave Steve the First Team nod. Opinions are clearly divided.

Don't you sometimes wish that Gullit had the capacity to engineer his great ideas?

I mean he was all for replacing Lee and Shearer and look at where we are now. He may have been afr too radical in that he didn't give Lee a squad number but the plan for the team was probably right. He wouldn't have survived with the spending restraints that Bobby a endured.

BR gave Steve C. his 1st team debut only after putting him on the transfer list last season and then taking him off - presumably action designed to address an attitude problem.

The different builds and styles of the Caldwells is what intrigues me so much about them.
Steve is a big aggressive sod, Gary is far more of a cultured defensive 'wing-half' in old money. Potentially they could make the perfect CB pairing, if they continue developing at the present rate.

I always thought that Gullit's plan was right just the method was a bit off.

Rob Lee in his crap autobiography said they fell out when Gullit suggested it would be best if Lee played one in three games. Lee said he had hi England place to worry about & said 1 in 3 games was no use to him. I support Gullit here, Gullit shouldn't care how Lee's England career is going, after all he's paid by Newcastle not England.

Congratulations to Steve Caldwell who has been called up to the full Scotland Squad for the match against Poland.

Newcastle defender Stephen Caldwell has revealed how being transfer-listed by Bobby Robson helped him to his first call-up to the full Scotland squad.

The 20-year-old from Stirling was elevated from the U21 party when Hearts star Steven Pressley was forced out.

He said: "When the gaffer (Robson) came in he put me on the list. It maybe gave me the wee kick up the bum I needed. I knew I was good enough to stay."

Well, we have a new full international in the squad.
Stevie Caldwell came on on the hour for Scotland in their 1-1 draw with Poland this evening. He played in a midfield holding role and did pretty well, winning a few tackles and laying it off nice and simple.
He was actually involved in the build-up to Scotland's equaliser, a penalty put away by Scott Booth.

It was amusing to see Caldwell looking as confident as he always does, pointing and shouting encouragement to others. Great stuff - congratulations young Stevie.

Aye, he looked immediately at home. Some nasty tackles flying about from the Poles for a so called 'friendly'.
