From icNewcastle:

Manchester United have slapped in a £15 million bid for Kieron Dyer - and it has been turned down by Newcastle United.

But Manchester United immediately let the hierarchy at St James's Park know that they will be back in the summer.

And that they will then make a £20 million-take-it-or-leave-it offer for United's England international.

Newcastle's resolve will be further tested in the close season as Italian ginats Juventus are also set to weigh in with an offer for Dyer which would break the British transfer record.

The Toon Army will be worried at the scale of interest in a player whom they are hoping United will build a new squad around.

But it will be assuring for them to know that United turned down the massive bid for Dyer from Old Trafford.

However what happens in the summer remains to be seen although Dyer will be going nowhere as long as he is injured.

Manchester United kept faith with Ruud Van Nistelrooy (pictured) while the PSV Eindhoven striker has recovered from his knee injury.

The will-of-the-wisp Dyer was Ruud Gullit's last outfield buy in the summer of 1999.

And even then United made a profit after selling Dietmar Hamann to Liverpool for £8million and replacing him with Dyer who cost £6million from Ipswich a couple of months later.

Now United, who bought Dyer without any sell-on clause in their deal with Ipswich, could make a massive £14 million profit on the 22-year- old should they decide to accept Manchester United's improved bid in the summer.

Meanwhile United are very interested in Vitesse Arnhem striker Victor Sikora after chief scout Charlie Woods watched him play against PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.

Sikora is in the Dutch squad for the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus tomorrow night.

Alain Goma finally made his Fulham debut in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Portsmouth after missing six games since he arrived at Craven Cottage in a £4 million switch from United last month because of a calf injury.

But the injury-prone Goma only last 44 minutes before he picked up a hip injury and needed to be substituted.

Phew....

At least we turned it down.....we don't NEED to sell him! unless his agent starts causing trouble we should be ok on this one...

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

If he goes do you think Ferguson would piss about playing Dyer in the hole behind the front two? Would he fuck. He'd play him on the right of a four man midfield and Dyer would be a sensation.

I don't think Dyer will go because I don't think we need the money that desperately. But I bet he won't sign a new and improved contract.

In many of his interviews Kieron Dyer has gone out of his way to state how happy he is at Newcastle and that he sees his long term future here. I hope that he remains true to these comments over the coming weeks as more bids are made.

Contractually, with three years left on his contract, the club are in a strong position. They aren't faced with the prospect of him walking away for free in a year if they don't sell now; indeed if he remains injury free then his value can only appreciate over the next two seasons. In the unlikely event of any truculence on Kierons part then the club should stand firm and use the disciplinary actions at their disposal. In short if the club decide that they want to keep Kieron Dyer then he should still be a Newcastle player next season.

However the 20M on offer may prove too tempting for the board to turn down especially when viewed in the light of Stonehouse's comment that financial stability is more important than building another team challenging for honours.

If Taggart does want him for wide right, does that mean Bex is on his way? £20m for a back-up winger seems a wee bit excessive. By the way, Dennis Irwin's future is unclear...what do you reckon? Bit of leadership at the back if we don't sign a shouty CB in the summer? Short-term maybe, but then Psycho did ok for a year.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Perhaps he sees Dyer doing a Beardsley for Van Toomanyvowelsrooy.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

DB - I don't think Taggart will want to interfere too much with his midfield. Manure already have the best midfield in the EPL; the main problem is lack of top class competition for the creative midfield berths. This leaves Taggart with few alternatives when things go wrong and probably also invites a degree of complacency among his midfield 4. He probably views KD as a either a supersub or someone to keep Beckham and Scholes on their toes rather than an automatic first choice.

So at Dyer's age a move to manure would not be that attractive. If he wants International football he will need to be playing regularly.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Let's hope that he appreciates that he will need to play well regularly.

What the f**k is a "will-of-the-wisp"?

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

will-o`-the-wisp:

Phosphorescent light seen on marshy ground; or, an elusive person; or, a delusive hope or plan.

Take your pick! (:o/

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Wasn't Will O' the Wisp a kids cartoon in the late '70's / early '80's era? As I remember there was a TV set called Evil Edna and a cat called Carpark.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Narrated by the late Kenneth Williams if I recall.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

SellElena,

I would prefer Dyer to go to those Italian ginats, than manure

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Gus - I'd prefer Dyer to stay at Newcastle rather than go anywhere.

What was the one where a Welsh dragon said "ello little old lady" to a witch?

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

It was Chorlton!! one of my faves...

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Was it Chorlton and the Wheelies? Mad, mad programme.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

And wasn't the stupid big dragon with the strong Welch accent called Clifford. I didn't half take some stick.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Excellent, people have kids to watch programmes like it.

Newcastle and Manchester United are remaining tight-lipped over claims that the PL champions have tabled a £15million bid for England's Kieron Dyer.

Reports in the north-east suggest that the Magpies have turned down the approach from Old Trafford, and will also resist an increased offer of up to £20million during the summer.

Neither club confirmed or denied the story, further fuelling speculation that Manchester United's interest in the midfielder is genuine and ongoing.

Newcastle have repeatedly insisted that Dyer is not for sale. "It's just speculation," a spokesman said. "We've said our bit and we're not saying anymore. The club does not comment on media speculation."

Manchester United's position was also ambiguous, and director of communications Paddy Harverson would only say: "We have no comment."

the backlash starts here.

Sell him, and reduce the price of the pies.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

And where else exactly does the 50 million quid over two years come from?

He's as good as gone.

The extra seating this year covers the interest on the loans. There is not much more left after that.

-- Anonymous, April 24, 2001

Can't see the point in selling unless a)we really need the money, or b) the player wants to leave, or c) he's surplus to requirements, or d) we're offered vastly more then his (potential) worth. Otherwise, why sell? Logically (ha!) there's no point unless we can buy a better player with the same or less money. In which case, why aren't Man U after that player instead? Admittedly, you can't rule out any of a,c and d for deffo at the moment.

-- Anonymous, April 25, 2001

bollocks to this, someone ask him if he wants to go, if he isn´t 100% committed sell him immediately for whatever. i´m sick of drippy bastards who play football -

YKD is quoted in The Journal this morning saying "My future is here on Tyneside".

Extract:

KD last night moved to reassure NCL fans that he will not be leaving the Club, despite freash reports that Man U are ready to pay £15mm for his services.

SJP Officials denied they had received any bid for Dyer, and BR was said to be furious that of of British football's most persistent rumours had resurfaced.

Dyer, receiving daily treatment as he bids to return to full training before the start of next season, insisted "I am staying at NCL and that is all there is to it. As far as I'm concerned, any talk of a £15mm bid is ridiculous, and nobody at the Club knows anything about it. I'm flattered that my name keeps being linked to other big Clubs, but at the moment all I'm concentrating on is getting fit.
I won't go the Manager's door asking to leave SJP, and the Club don't want me to leave. That's pretty conclusive but I can't stop the speculation
".

There you are straight from the horse's mouth, but this is precisely the way these big Clubs work to destabilise taregeted players. Believe me, the source of these rumours will have been none other than Manure themselves, via a third party, of course. B@st@rds!

"My future is here on Tyneside"

Thats sealed it then, he's definitely on his way. And who can blame him, he'll be an instant millionaire, a multi-millionaire by the end of next season, play in the European Cup (early rounds only mind), win the League, not bother with the domestic cups.

Or he can stay on Tyneside, win nowt, play in the Inter-Toto crap, get played out of position, pick up injuries and have our physios butcher him about.

In reply to dan, I would say that a)we do need the money, b)if he sees a better offer, he'll want out, c)he's not surplus to requirements when he plays the way we know he can but the more cash waved in front of his face, the less his commitment to us, d)15-20 million is an overestimation of his worth in my opinion but he could well be dynamite playing for a decent fast paced team like ManU.

It's easier to get to Ipswich from Manchester as well.

with you there dreadsy

-- Anonymous, April 25, 2001

Give the lad a chance. I know we've been stung by the "I'm committed to NUFC" drivel before (Harmoan for examplar extraordinaire) but I have a bit of faith with YKD.

Besides, he's virtually assured 1st team action week in and out with us, while Manure have an embarassment of riches in most departments and he may only get some 25 games in.

-- Anonymous, April 25, 2001

I really want to believe what Kieron says, and right now I don't doubt he is quite genuine in saying it. However, there is this annoying voice in my head that keeps saying "money talks" - which I think is Dread's point.

If manure have decided that they really want him, then I'm afraid they will up the ante until they get him. I hope I'm wrong.

-- Anonymous, April 25, 2001

His agent is not talking up a move and is in fact dismissing any contact. I appreciate that this could be viewed as publicising the transfer but I reckon this is being dismissed by all parties so it ain't going to happen.

Two things. We have to get behind Dyer. The club need to show the required ambition to keep Dyer.

With the uncertainty surrounding the manure team at the minute and with Fergie leavingit may be the wrong time, if there can be one, to join Manure.
