AVI questions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I'm completely new to the VCD world. I'm interested in copying some VHS's to CD but I don't know where to begin. I have an ATI a-i-w. It records in avi format. Is that bad? Should I convert it to an mpeg format? What is the fundamental difference in formats? Will an mpeg format take less space than an avi format(I'm only getting about 25 minutes time in AVI format). If I should convert to mpeg format, what software would you recommend? And to get optimal image quality what should I set the fps at? I'm running a Celeron 466 with 128MB RAM and an ATI a-i-w pro. Can anybody help me? I would appreciate any advice and input.

Much thanks,

Daniel

Daniel, essentially, you need to follow these steps: 1) capture video (software: AVIO, or VirtualDub or the one you had) 2) encode to MPEG-1 format (software: TMPEnc) 3) burn that MPEG-1 file on Video CD (software: Nero) Details can be found at www.vcdhelp.com. Pretty well documented.
