If OK had a 10-mila team, what would the line up be?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

If OK were to put together a team for 10-Mila, what would the line up look like? The legs look like this:

1 dusk/night 10,6 - 10,8 (forked)
2 night 10,6 - 10,8 (forked)
3 night 10,6 - 10,8 (forked)
4 night 15,9 (not forked)
5 night 7,1 - 7,3 (forked)
6 night 7,1 - 7,3 (forked)
7 night/dawn/day 6,0 (not forked)
8 dawn/day 9,5 - 9,6 (forked)
9 day 9,5 - 9,6 (forked)
10 day 15,2 (forked)

For purposes of discussion -- you should feel free to include former-OKers (like the Wallenborgs, for example), and even people who "have the right stuff" but are not yet officially recognized as OKers.

For each leg, I posted the leg number, the lighting condition, the leg length and if the leg is forked or not.

Here is my line-up:

1. Sanna. Sanna is a strong runner and has a headlamp. I think she'll be in great shape after training for the Vasaloppet this winter (a long -- 90 km, I think -- ski race). She's been selected to run the first leg for IF Thor. I think she'll be able to use her strength to stay with other teams that she might lose to if she was on her own.

2. Raymond. He has some night O' experience (I think). The only question mark is his current O' form -- with the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in England, I'm afraid he hasn't had much time to practice orienteering. Still, I look for Raymond to be able to make use of other runners in the forest.

3. Michael. I put myself on a reasonably long night leg. I love night orienteering, I've got a fair amount of night O' experience, and I'm reasonably fit.

4. Magnus. Magnus is my pick for the "Long Night" leg. Like Sanna, Magnus should still be in good shape after doing Vasaloppet. The Long Night is not forked. Magnus has the competitive attitude to hang with runners even if they are running faster than he'd run on his own.

5. Dan. Dan is not in great shape. So he gets a short leg. He's got a lot of O' experience and a headlamp.

6. Peggy. I don't know if Peggy has done much night O'. But, I'm counting on her experience to pull her through.

7. Mary. We won't be in the lead -- so this leg will be as the sun comes up. Mary might have to start with a lamp. Mary is not in great shape, but she's been training decently the last few months. She's been a constant presence on OK relay teams in the last few years. This leg is not forked and Mary will be able to take advantage of seeing others in the forest.

8. Gene. Like Mary, Gene has a lot of experience and has been training well recently. This is a long leg and I'm counting on Gene to push himself hard.

9. Frtiz. Fritz is a question mark. I'm not sure how he has been training. This leg will be tough -- it is long and the orienteering will be difficult. Fritz will be up to it.

10. Mook. The last leg is long and tough. Mook is our top runner. Mook will run the anchor.

I've got a couple of alternates -- Mark M., Alan E., Nancy N., and Dick N. These folks will be ready to step in at a moments notice. Mark, Dick and Nancy have all run on OK relay teams in the last few years.

Steve H., Karen K. and Dave L. are all emergency back-ups. They would have had shots at the team, but they haven't been active enough recently.

The OK team will also have two "technical assistants/coaches" -- JJ and Swampfox. Both are strong enough to make the team. But, neither has yet earned the OK-insider status needed for me to pick them above someone I've already selected (though they both "have the right stuff" and have demonstrated it by posting to the OK forum). If they perform well as assitants and coaches, look for them to move on to the team next year.

Have I made any mistakes? Have I left out anyone I should include?

Peggy has been heard to say (within the last year or two), "I don't do night-O". So some reordering would probably be appropriate. Perhaps switch her with Fritz?

I suspect that Peggy doesn't do a lot of night-o, but I'm sure that Peggy will do night-o if OK calls on her to do so.

Madeline Sandman and/or Elena Kajamaa (I doubt I spelled those right) could also be called on to deliver runs for OK if the need arises.
