great idea for all that junk mail that comes in the mail!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Do you get a ton of junk mail, well forget about making paper logs,no more paying to take it to the dump/landfill, give it all back to them, envelope and all! you dont want it so why pay to dispose of it? let them have it back, plus some extra paper products envelopes etc, and ask them if they like recieving junk mail!

Please check out this site!!! and forward it to your friends, we can get rid of these junk mail senders through increased postage!

I shred mine for use as worm bedding. Figure since I use red wiggler manure worms its just more crap to feed them :>) I do know a few folks who mail it back as you suggest.

All you have to do is write 'Refused' and initial it and give it back to the PO and they'll dispose of it. I don't know about nationwide, but locally it all goes off to the recycling center.

A friend taught me to cut off the gummed edges of the junk mail return envelopes, making narrow paper strips. Then you can use it as a rainy day diversion for your children. Give them a wet sponge and some construction paper and they can wet the gummed strips and make designs with them.

Don't know if it'll work now, but in the '80s I used to receive a ton of credit card apps. They often have an 800 number on them. I called everytime I received one and told them I was broke, please take me off your list. It worked for years, once I covered most of the different cards.

Are you ready for this?? I get junk mail IN my natural gas bill. That's right-IN IT!! About half of the weight is the junk mail. When I complained about it, I was told it was to "help defray the cost of postage". BULL!! Postage is part of the cost of doing business. I don't think this illegal, but it certainly is in very poor taste. Oh well, I'll get off the soapbox now. Hi Lynn. John D in Pa

I've heard of folks attaching the postage paid envelopes that come with junk mail to bricks and mailing it back. The company has to pay the cost of anything shipped with that on it! You could send these envelopes back to them with religious pamphlets or even an invitation to subscribe to Countryside :o). I currently have one credit card company that sends me at least 2 letters a week(the same company!). I wrote them and asked if they were insane...there is no way I am going to pay 24% interest! I'm about to the mailing a brick stage on this one :o).

Any time I get unsolicited mail that has a postage paid envelope I tear all the stuff up and mail it back to them, sometimes I tear my name off of it. I have even been tempted to pay the postage to send some stuff back. When I get inserts with my bill, I include it with the payment. This gives me a good deal of satisfaction.

Blessings, Judy

Making logs for burning from junkmail isn't necessarily a good idea if you have a wood stove with a catalytic converter. The metals, clays, and other inks/coatings on the paper will react with the converter, decreasing its effectiveness. This means that you will be sending more of your wood out the smokestack as smoke rather than as heat.
