Vacation Routine

Pack your bags and hit the road. That's the way most of us get started, but there are some things that could and should be done around the house that make a lot of sense and might prevent an unhappy homecoming. Many times people have returned to broken and gushing pipes. Consider turning off the water before you go. Depending on the length of the vacation there are some things that will save money while you're gone. If you will be gone more than a few days, consider turning the water heater to pilot or flipping the breaker off if it is electric. There is no reason to heat water for no one to use. What about the TV, VCR, and other electronics? Most of these are on even when they are off. It is a small amount of electricity, but why waste it? Unplug electronics for energy conservation and also to avoid damage from electrical storms and power surges. One more thing -- set the thermostat back since there is no reason to keep the temperature in a house at human comfort levels when the house has no humans.
