Tomato seedlings dieing!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Why do my tomato seedlings in planter trays grow to about 1 1/2" high, then stems dry up and seedlings die? Somebody said I need to set them out to harden, doesn't seem to be the right answer. HELP!!!!

woodsbilly, could you be over watering?? Sounds like perhaps "dampening off" to me. Joy suggested a camomile tea on the other forum, and it worked on a tray of snapdragons I was having trouble. My biggest problems with small seedlings is that I tend to over water.

Concur with diane.Let them get rather dry, instead. Helps toughen them up as well.Air circulation needed, too.Use a soiless mix if you didn't.Clorinate containers before use, extension agent recommended 24 hrs soak. These all should help cut down on dampening off.

Raising my own seedlings since I was 18. 88 tomato plants currently in the greenhouse. Some have tomatoes on.Please don't ask what I'm doing with 88 tomato plants.Shhhhhhh. Nick doesn't know what I've done, yet. I'm keeping it hush hush. Lives depend on your secrecy, you understand. :-D

Sharon for heaven sakes! How much tomato sauce do you guys need. Oooooo NICK....

Kirk..it's a loooong story, involving death threats made. Just trust me on this. DO NOT TELL NICK! He'll find out soon enough. He has to plant them, soon. I'm currently working on my story as to how this all came about.I'm planning on using the genetic engineering defence. Then they mutated and replicated themselves.Throwing cloning in there too. I'm still firming up the details.

Well, just ask Jim-I had to warn him.

Sounds like damping off to me too.

We have somehow managed to raise about 200 tomato plants, and we still can't stop! Part of it is our plan to do a really good job of saving seeds this year. The scary thing is that we did it in the kitchen window, yet we're planning on building a greenhouse for next year. Yikes!!!

I have always been told maters prefer their feet sorta dry. Lynn put some last year in divider trays then set em in a catch tray to keep water on em all the time and the same thing happened to hers.

Thanx ya'll, 200 thirsty 'mater plants coming up!

Uh...David,stop now.Just stop it right now, before you too get threats from your spouce about murdering the next person who sends you seed.We have self help groups set up now to aid you in extracting yourself from this horrible addition. It's not too late. You can get help if you just recognize the problem and admit to yourself that you need it.

I'm there for you,if you need me.I understand.I feel your pain. So, keep those green thumbs up.

Sharon, it's worse than that! We both want to try every kind of tomato available, and then plant twice as many as we need just in case they don't make it, then we re-start the ones that don't make it anyway, then we make our garden bigger to fit them all, then we start more because we have a bigger garden...

It's too late. Just keep making more gardens, like we do. Well, I tried to do an intervention....sigh.But you two are just feeding off each other. You are doomed to maniacal gardening, for eternity.

Sounds good to me!
