Lee Straight Back To Training After Op

Robert Lee looks likely to be back at Newcastle's Chester-le-Street training base by the end of the week following the first operation of his professional career.

It is understood United's most experienced midfielder will be able to resume supervised light training almost immediately following minor surgery to clear up debris in his knee.

However, it is unlikely that the 35-year-old will kick a ball again before the end of the season and his schedule will be limited to swimming, jogging and gym work.

On Saturday, Bobby Robson revealed that the recovery time for the type of surgery Lee underwent yesterday is no more than six weeks but by then the rest of the Newcastle squad will be enjoying their summer break.

That means Lee will have a further six weeks to rest before he prepares for next season but he is expected to join the likes of Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer for treatment throughout the summer. The former England international was devastated to miss Saturday's Wear-Tyne derby but, following two games in the space of three days over the Easter weekend, he was always rated doubtful for the trip to Sunderland.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed two friendlies for next month after Bobby Robson revealed he will maintain his first team's training schedule for a full week after the end of the season.

Earlier this month The Journal revealed Newcastle would take on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in a benefit match for Baggies' defender Daryl Burgess on Tuesday, 8 May.

And the club last night confirmed that an additional fixture had been arranged for the Tuesday following the final league game of the season - against Exeter City at St James Park on May 22.

Robson spent six years as a West Brom player and admitted: "I have very fond memories.

"When the invitation came through, as a former player, I was more than happy to accept, given the break we have in our fixture list that week. I am equally delighted that we can support Exeter and it's important that the bigger Premiership clubs help the smaller teams in the Nationwide League."

Newcastle fans travelling to West Brom will be housed in the Smethwick End and tickets (£10 adults, £5 cons, £22 family ticket) can be bought in advance from The Hawthorns by calling (0121) 553 5472, or at the turnstiles on the night. Seating and standing tickets are available in advance of the trip to Exeter - call (01392) 254073.
