Earthquake in Southeastern Idaho Felt as Far as Salt Lake City

The Associated Press Published: Apr 21, 2001

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 hit southeastern Idaho on Saturday. Tremors were felt from Pocatello to Yellowstone, and as far away as Salt Lake City. No damages or injuries were immediately reported in the quake, which occurred at 11:18 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"This is a remote area, so I wouldn't expect a lot of damage," said Sue Nava, seismic network manager at the University of Utah seismograph station.

The earthquake was centered 27 miles northwest of Afton, Wyo., southwest of Grand Teton National Park.

"I was just sitting in my front room and I heard a noise that sounded like a truck and felt it shake about three to four seconds," said Kevin Jackson, 45, of Afton.

The temblor was the biggest to hit Idaho since a 5.8-magnitude quake in 1994.
