Name a House

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

As some of you might know I'm moving back to the Holy Land (well, near enough...little village north of Hexham). Being a bit of a twat and that I thought it would be nice to have a name for the house rather than a number. Normally this looks like a prime candidate suggestion for a reet heed kicking, but the house is really set on its own so it would be pretty cool.

I think football based ones would be frowned upon (hence "Beardsley House" or "Keegan Cottage" are likely to be rejected...by my wife anyway). More subtle choices could be "Milburn House" but I've already been told "Hatethemakems Villa" probably wouldn't get past the council.

Suggestions please :-)

Answers

Magpie Cottage is nicely countrified sounding

(Is it the thing now to reply and get this on the answers page? - been a bit offline of late)

How about

Badgerville?

It's got the reet colours and you're as mad as a badger :))

Whereabouts is your new house, Bobby? I'm from that area, not now like - I'm in South Africa, for the Lennox Lewis fight + a few other things ;-))

How about "Toonsville"?

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Totobawa........

toon toon black and white army...

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

It's in Wark, about 10 miles north of Hexham - 3 pubs, 2 shops, at least 1 resident makem

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

I used to play Cricket for Wark Juniors! Down by the river is the cricket pitch. Battlesteads Pub used to be a frequent haunt during my youth and the infamous Wark discos!!

Still have a couple of friends in that area.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Mine is called

"toonhoose"

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

De B

Heard about the discos - something about the occasional bother? Seems to have died off. Not been to the Battlesteads yet (has its own web site and fancies itself as a bit of a fancy place) but been to both the Bull pubs.

BOBBY - The Mackem is called Phil he works for the same company as me....

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Kenny

Any knowledge of 'Phil's' past, especially of particularly embarassing incidents (apart from those naturally occuring to makems...like being born a makem) would be a great way to introduce myself to the village community.

The breadth of this web community never fails to impress me :-)

Hey Bobby, not coming up to work in the Northern Deanery at all are you?

I've always thought that McBurney's Point would be a good name for a house... no football content that I can see though. Under no circumstances listen to any suggestions about "Tiwy".

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Grrrr Jonno and TIWY have a lot to answer for ;))

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Bill

No job to move to at the moment. Either going to stay here for a while and see what happens, or (more likely) jack it in, move up and temp while looking.

A job at Northern Deanery would be most welcome, however...have I ever told you how much I've admired your work? :-)

I think "Norbert" is a nice name for a house. I used to like "Toby" as well, except people started calling their dogs that.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Our next door neighbours called a stray cat they adopted Toby - unfortunately it turned out to be a girl cat and got pregnant.

Can you spay a house? I can't afford to keep a litter of baby cottages. At least one of you could offer a good home...

Dinner jacket, top hat, hackney carriage...

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Do not spey the house, unless you have white ants or cockroaches!

If you have lots of little houses its called development isn't it. I am sure you will need a license from the council for that!

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

OK, OK I'll put in a good word for you anywhere you want Bobby.

Not that I'm a sucker for shameless flattery or anything, like.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Gallowgate is a good name for a house.... or how about ... Bobby's Shack

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Dooley Towers?

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Cheers folks, some nice thinking here :-)

Local town or area names are popular choices, indeed. Maybe "Once Brewed House", or "Pity Me"...

I still favour openly antagonistic naming - "Nomakemsorsmogs Gardens", "Monkeysheed", "Magpie Range".

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

"Tom" would be nice - but you'd have to hang down your head! (One for the Togs)

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Like I've never heard that one before :-)

Tyne House has possibilities (not Tynebrand though) as we're close to the North Tyne River.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Tynewark House

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

"Confluence Cottage" as you are close to the confluence of the North and South Tynes or simply "Meeting of the Waters House"

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Not that close though to associate your house with is it? The confluence is at Acomb isn't it?

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

"Wark On By"? (could be taken as synonomous with "go forth & x")

"Wark Right In"? (better for a pub)

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

How abooot

'imaginethehouseIcouldofgotifIrecievedfreetickets' house

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Bobby, frankly I'm envious. All the best with the job-hunting. St James' Cottage?

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Hey Bobby, How about "Evergreens". Named after that lovely pub in Drury Lane that Toon fans would gather in to watch the big screen.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

How about

Marcelino Cottage

Dedicated to the great man himself.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Nah, it'll never sell when he wants to move ;-)

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Sea View could raise the odd chuckle.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

I like Softies suggestion of Sea View......alternatively how about 'Laydoonyaheed' as in the song.

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

Bobby How about making the name of the house a conversational gambit? e.g. "Dooley's Dilemma".

btw are you related in any way to the late goal scoring phenomenon of Sheffield Wednesday?...I believe his name was Derek Dooley (but my memory is not the best? phoenix

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

'Dooleyville'?

'Casa Dooley'?

'Hoose!'

As ever, i'm full of great ideas...;))

-- Anonymous, April 20, 2001

What about this on your envelopes:
MR R Dooley
"Ganforra"
Wark
Northumberland

-- Anonymous, April 22, 2001

Bobby, I apologise for my flippant name suggestion earlier.

How about "Greenspun" or "BBS"

Ernest is nice also. I'm going home to sit down in Ernest.

Dunmoovin is another

-- Anonymous, April 22, 2001

how about Warkicanhardlywaalk Manor .

-- Anonymous, April 22, 2001

"Newcastle United Training Facility"

-- Anonymous, April 23, 2001

"Ganforra" has potential as has "Abootatenminute" etc...

As for training facility, it's probably too well equipped for that.

Cheers gang for all your nice words, I'll let you all know how the move proceeds and just when and where you can buy me a pint on arrival :-)

-- Anonymous, April 23, 2001

Oh sorry Bobby. Didn't realise you had grass outside your house.
