Judicial Watch

Judicial Watch, a persistent pain in the butt for the Clinton Administration, is now going after Tom Delay, and I for one am delighted. Businesses have been faced with basically shakedown demands from him and his cronies.

Do you have a report or link on this, Peter? I'd like to see that myself!

OG, the news that Judicial Watch is going after DeLay in particular comes from a (very good in my opinion) DC weekly newspaper called "The Hill", which lists its Website as www.hillnews.com. April 18 issue, p7, article by David Keene. Actually I knew about this matter before reading the Keene article, can't tell you from where.

About strongarming businesses, I've known this for years. Dick Armey has really been into this. Some of it may be in Elizabeth Drew's book on the corruption of American politics.

MEDIA ADVISORY (PRESS CONFERENCE)

JUDICIAL WATCH FORCED TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION TO STOP TOM DELAY AND NRCC FROM SELLING MEETINGS WITH BUSH OFFICIALS

Judicial Watch Asked Delay/NRCC to Cease and Desist and They Refused

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, has learned, as described in a recent Associated Press report, that House Majority Whip Tom Delay and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) are selling meetings with Bush Administration officials for $20,000 contributions by donors. In a fundraising pitch to potential donors, Delay and the NRCC improperly offered:

I am asking you to serve as an honorary member of our [the NRCC’s]new Business Advisory Council. . . . As an honorary member, you will be invited to meetings with top Bush administration officials, where your opinions on issues like tax reform will be heard.

A Judicial Watch letter sent to Mr. Delay’s office asking that he cease and desist from this activity was met with a non-response, constituting an admission. Another letter from the NRCC confirms that the practice is occurring.

“It is improper and illegal to sell official public office for political campaign contributions. When Clinton did this, Judicial Watch acted. We cannot look the other way when Republicans do the same thing,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman. “Conservatives have to keep their own house in order if they are to have the moral authority to suggest to others what to do,” added Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

The Press conference announcing the legal action will take place at The National Press Club’s Edward R. Murrow Room, 14th & F Street, NW, Washington, DC on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 2:00 pm ET.
