S.C. Senator Replacement Bill OKd

COLUMBIA, S.C.--A state House subcommittee on Wednesday approved a bill that would require the governor to replace a U.S. senator who does not complete his term with a senator of the same political party. The legislation is not specifically aimed at U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, who is 98, said Rep. Chip Limehouse. Thurmond is Republican; Gov. Jim Hodges is a Democrat.

The U.S. Senate is split evenly between Democrats and Republicans.

The bill now goes to the full House Judiciary Committee.
