Mainly his life. His mother died when he was 2, just about every woman he ever loved left him or died on him, his stepfather was a jerk, and his resume consisted of many different editing jobs in various places, since he couldn't hold on to one for very long. He tried the army, and was a success, but his stepfather wouldn't fund his tuition, so he had to leave. He had a very tragic life, which was perfect to fuel his ingenious works.
