Anyone Want Free Tomato Seeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I am trying a bunch of different tomatoes this year and it dawned on me now that I have the seeds planted that maybe someone could use the seeds I didn't need. They are this year's seeds and I planted sixteen of each type so I am not going to need the other seeds. Here are the seeds that I have and if you e-mail me and say which ones you want I'll mail them to you:

Better Homes and Gardens Beefmaster " " Jubilee " " Flavor More 207 Hybrid " " Brandywine Burpee Roma " Super Beefsteak " Big Boy " Better Boy " Super Sweet 100

If any of you have left over seeds for New Hampshire Surecrop I would sure like to have them. I was going to order a packet but with a $3.95 handling charge just to get one packet of seeds from Territorial seeds I figured it wasn't worth it.

Oops! I didn't see the posting about seed and plant exchange before I sent this. I just happened to think about my leftover tomato seeds and sat down and posted. Wasn't sitting to read the postings. When I got through with my posting, I decided to read whatever else was here and found it. I'll be happy to exchange my seeds if someone has something they want to give me such as perennials or the New Hampshire Surecrop tomato. I just didn't want my seeds to go to waste like they usually do when I have planted all that I need.

Colleen, most seeds are supposed to be viable for several years. You might want to save some for next year too. You're supposed to tape the packet back together, write the year on it, and put it somewhere cool and dry. Not in plastic for some reason, maybe if offgasses something.

Thanks Joy but I have been saving left over seeds for so many years and each year I would have some good luck and some bad luck with germination that this year I decided to chuck all of them I had saved from before and start the year with fresh seeds. But I didn't want to just throw them away when they were fresh this year so that is why I decided I would give them to someone who needs them. The only seeds I intend to save this year are from the non-hybrid varieties I have bought because I want to be able to produce my own seed because I still have an interest in saving seed. The problem with the store bought seed is that the law allows seeds that are sold in a particular year to not necessarily be from that prior year. They just have to meet a certain germination rate in tests. So theoretically the seed could be quite old. I would rather start with something fresh and then start saving each year from my own seed then I know it is fresh.
