Two pubs were badly damaged in the violence

Three men have been arrested after hundreds of youths ran riot in Bradford, throwing petrol bombs and bricks at cars and pubs.

More than 100 officers were called in to deal with the disturbances in the Liggett Green area of the city on Sunday night.

At least four people were injured by flying glass and stones, said a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police.

Reports have suggested that tension had been high in the area between Asian and white youths.

Pubs damaged

The police spokesman said officers responded to reports of a large fight at the Coach House pub in Legrams Lane at 2030BST.

"These disturbances were spread over a large area and involved a number of groups," he said.

"The Coach House itself was badly damaged with windows broken and reports of a fire on the premises."

At least eight vehicles were set on fire and destroyed in the pub car park.

Police in riot gear were called in as the violence spread through the district.

Staff at a second pub, The Second West, took refuge in an upstairs room as youths hurled bricks and petrol bombs, badly damaging the building.

Terry Lawrence, the landlord of The Second West, told the BBC: "It was frightening for me and the fellers as well. The women and children upstairs were screaming and crying."

He said one man had suffered a heart attack and an 80-year-old woman had been hit in the head by a flying brick.

Elsewhere, shop windows were broken and properties damaged as the violent disturbances spread through the neighbourhood.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

None of the injuries were thought to be serious, the spokesman added.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information to help their enquiries.
