Strong Quake Strikes off Coast of Japan The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) - A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off Japan's eastern coast Sunday, officials said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The quake struck at 8:28 a.m. about 310 miles east of Tokyo, Japan's meteorological agency said.

An eight-inch rise in ocean wave levels was predicted, but it was not expected to affect residents, the agency said.

On Saturday, a magnitude 5.4 quake struck the northern island of Hokkaido. Soon afterward on Saturday, a magnitude 4.3 quake rumbled beneath the western province of Tottori, southwest of Tokyo.

Neither tremor caused injuries or damage.

In late March, a magnitude-6.4 temblor hit five states in southwestern Japan, reportedly injuring at least 160 people. More than 6,000 people died when an earthquake devastated the western Japanese port city of Kobe in 1995.
