A question,

It's upgrading time!, since I'am thinking to change my paper/developer combination, this question. I red some good reviews about Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone, only the tone is a bit to warm for me. Ideally I would like to come to neutral/warmtone after using selenium bath for Dmax enhancement. Does anybody have experiene with this paper in combination with a cooltone developer?

Pascal, you might try the Agfa MC111 paper in Photographer's Formulary 130 paper developer. A nice neutral to warm tone and deep blacks even without selenium toning.

I've tried Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone in Ansco 130, a cool tone developer, and the results were a bit too greenish for my liking. I found that it gives a more pleasing hue of warm tone with Dektol.

Pascal, Maybe it's a too expensive solution, but a gold toner can cool down FB Warmtone to anywhere to deep blue. Using it after selenium extends your pallete to a broad spectrum of toning possibilities. Regards.

Until you actually try the paper you won't know if it will work for you, in your darkroom with your processing. If you are looking for a cooltone paper that is very maneuverable take a good look at Forte Polygrade V or the Forte warmtone. Bergger in both warm and coldtone is also a good choice. Both are able to be moved around a lot more than Ilford papers both in choice of developers and with toning after printing.
