Bike Theft

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Kentlands : One Thread

Yesterday my bike was stolen out of our garage, during the day. I always close the garage door at night but, during the day my three kid's go in & out all day long for their bikes, rollerblades, scooters etc. the door is left mostly open, until now. I figured it happened between 4 & 6pm, as I had just swept the garage and lined our six bikes up, mine deepest into the garage. Well at least they left my helmet........

Good News! I received a phone call @ 1:30am this morning from the Gaithersburg Police, they had my bike. A guy was stopped earlier for an unrelated offense, when they "ran" his name the police found outstanding warrants. They decided to check the serial number of the bike he was riding against theft reports and ........ mine showed up. I'm glad now that I stuff receipts into a file, and that the bike store wrote the serial number on the receipt. The reason the Police called so late was so that I could get the bike back right away, before it went to some county facility. The suspect is under arrest and will be prosecuted. I was very lucky, but it pays to save those receipts, get serial numbers, and file a report.

I was wondering if you know whether it was an adult or adolescent who took your bike (I consider 18 the cutoff) and if the person was from a neighboring development. We have had some occurences here on the hill, but no robberies that I know of.

A few years ago, I had my bike stolen off my second floor balcony in Kentlands Ridge. I didn't think I needed to chain it up on the second floor, but I was apparently wrong. Never did get the bike back.

Is there enough interest at this point for Neighborhood Watch in the Hill District? Is anyone interested in checking out what this would entail, e.g., with the Gaithersburg Police? Do any of the other districts in Kentlands have Neighborhood Watch? I have heard that it can be quite effective in helping to deter crime.

Is it safe to assume the perp was not a Kentlands Resident?

I recieved a subpoena today for the State of Maryland vs. Charles D. Hardin. The name is not familiar to me, nor did it show up on a search on infousa.com. The trial is on May 14, I'll post the results.

Justice is swift here in MC. I'm glad this incident ended on the side of law and order. I guess Gaithersburg still has some elements of "small town" at work. Like the police do their jobs, for example.
