its been going for years, dyer is the big one, but what else?

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

Richard Wright, Jermaine Wright, Jamie Scowcroft, Titus Bramble. David Johnson sold for 3M. Dyer sold for 6M. Lot's of players bought cheaply who are now producing the goods ( Stewart, Holland, Armstrong ). We could learn a lot from these guys. Imagine starting from that sort of base and then being able to strengthen it with the sort of money that Keegan and Dalglish spent.

I for one would be happy to have George Burley as a future NUFC manager.

George Burley is the ideal man for your long term option on the other thread. Would he move? Will he prove himself next year as well?

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

Over the long term it's hard to see Ipswich doing much better than they have this season. A UEFA cup place and perhaps a cup run are the what they could realistically expect to achieve. Therefore if GB has ambitions to manage in the Champions League he would most probably have to leave Ipswich to do it.

Whether or not he would move to Newcastle is debatable and any decision would hinge on the ambition of the board and the financial backing they were prepared to offer. Having spent 6 years building a team from scratch at Ipswich it's unlikely that he would want to start from scratch again at Newcastle. If the board were to say that they wanted CL football back within 3 years are were prepared to spend 20M a season to get this then he may be interested.

How bloody embarrassing is it for the Chairman of NUFC to be taken to Ipswich to learn how to do things properly - after already having being in the job for about 4 years!!
Is it any wonder we're a laughing stock?

btw, I believe David Johnson may have joined Ipswich from manure.

Stockport wasn't it?

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

Having a wonderfull youth set up dosen't always bring sucsess. Look at Crewe Alexandra.

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

No, but 40 odd thousand ST holders puts us in slightly stronger position than Crewe.
Put another way - a Club with a "wonderful youth set up" AND 40 odd thousand ST holders would be hard pressed to fail - even NUFC!

Just a thought - off on a tangent I'm afraid. Does Burley have any links with YBR??

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

YBR was his gaffer screach,

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

Thought so. Just wanted to check. Interesting link, what with wanting to see some continuity and all that. Just wonder what Mr Shearer would think of it. And the rest of you??

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

I am thinking that with Arsenal beating Mancity 4-0 at half time, we should be at least eight down in our corresponding fixture. Remind me again that City BEAT us at our place, ahhhhhhh right so who's going to City next year then?

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

I'd feel far better having Burley at the helm than Shearer/Lee/Barton after Bobby steps down. The 3 Musketeers can continue their studies under Burley and be ready to step in after HE moves on.

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

After working for a Chairman like David Sheepshank for about 8 years why on earth would Burley elect to come to the Toon? A Club with greater potential yes, but what real chance of achieving success?
Just can't see it.

The kind of fellow you admire for loyalty and integrity in sticking to the task despite limited funds and being the nearly-men so often. Oddly enough, that sort of loyalty and integrity wouldn't count for diddly if he sodded off to manage a "big" club. That's why Martin O'Neil will stand and fall by his results at Celtic; walking out on Leicester lost him the sympathy vote.

-- Anonymous, April 12, 2001

O'Neill joined Leicester in December 1996 and left in the summer of 2000, three and a half years. They won League Cup in 97 and 2000, runners up in 99, finished 9th, 9th, 9th, 8th. Don't think he really did nothing for them.

He supported Celtic as a boy and had the same calling as Shearer had to go 'home'.

Burley will adore Bobby Robson, gave him his debut at 17 against George Best, manged him to Wembley win in 1978, and played him in the good Ipswich side he created. I guess Buff will like Burley as he has an understated Scottish hardness. Did his apprenticeship at Ayr, then moved up. Ipswich may well be his spiritual home and he feels comfortable there but he may well also have ambitions. I'd be happy with him.

I didn't mean to suggest that O'Neill did nothing for Leicester (can't see where I did), but whereas he got sympathy for sticking with Leicester and trying to do the best he could with limited resources, he doesn't have that at a "big" club, and the press will give him no lee-way.

Paul Jewell got loads of sympathy from the press whilst battling at Bradford City but was savaged for moving to Sheffield Wednesday likewise Danny Wilson at Barnsley. Hoddle will get no sympathy at Spurs whilst even poor results at Sotton were overlooked because of the circumstances.

If Burley walked out on Ipswich and failed in any way at a "big" club then he would be ripped to shreds. Stay at Ipswich and he will continue to be talked up and admired even if they get relegated.

At least for the next 2 yrs while Bobby rebuilds NUFC. Who knows what could happen then...

-- Anonymous, April 12, 2001

Just to sort out a bit of confusion above. David Johnson joined Man United as a youth then was released and went to Bury. From there he joined Ipswich for something like 700,000 - can't remember exactly. I was at a pre-season game between Bury and Wrexham(?) in the Isle of Man once. I was sitting next to the manager of Port Vale. We were just nattering (name dropping or what!!) and he said to me "What do you think of that Johnson lad?" I replied that he was tripe because he played with his head down all the time and was totally selfish. This is why I never made it big in the scouting field!!

And with regard to Rik's comments about Crewe. They have definitely got one of the best Youth set ups in the country. In fact Jermaine Wright started at Crewe before Ipswich bought him. They have produced players like David Platt (ditched by Man U), Danny Murphy, Rob Jones (sadly now retired through injury at Liverpool), Jermaine Wright, Neil Lennon (nice boy!), Robbie Savage (nicer still) and many more I can't remember. The two latest likely premiership players of the future are Kenny Lunt and a 17 year old striker called Dean Ashton.

Dario insists on teaching his players how to play properly and is astonished at the number of times he has picked up cast offs from supposedly "big" clubs only to find they have never had any proper coaching.

Incidentally, I remember when we were thinking about buying Dyer I suggested on the old communicata board that we try to get Holland too. I was told by someone with Ipswich connections at the time that he wasn't good enough for the Prem!

Holland is another guy who came from the lower divisions - Bournemouth to be exact - and whilst Ipswich paid a decent fee for a second division player (800,000 I think) it does make you wonder why Bobby keeps looking abroad if you can get blokes like him for comparative peanuts. I know we would have to look long term with players like that but surely it's better buying someone like Matt Holland for 800,000 and nurturing him for 12 months until he is really ready for the prem, rather than spend x million on a foreigner who may or may not come off. Incidentally, another great point in Holland's favour - he is NEVER injured!

Jaco,

Why has Dario Gradi never joined a big Club?

If I was Chairman of a PL Club I would pay really serious money to get him on my staff, even if not as 1st team manager. Do you think he could hack it as a PL Manager, or is his forte coaching/developing young players?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2001

Whoopes, sorry for the mispelling Jaco Jacko!!

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2001

Whoops, sorry for spelling "whoops" incorrectly Miss!
Shall I just stand over there in the corner, Miss?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2001

Clarky, are you p*ssed?!!

Many people have asked this question about Dario and a premiership club. I don't know whether he has ever been approached but certainly he is on an astonishingly good number at Crewe so it would take much persuasion to get him to leave. He has, I understand, a 10 year contract and a seat on the board. He has a deal which sees him get a percentage of any transfer sales. Now whilst this doesn't bring in the sort of dosh you could get from a prem club, he probably has the best level of job security of anyone anywhere in the league. He has virtually a totally free hand in the running of the club and a chairman in John Bowler who backs him all the way. He seems happy as a pig in muck so why move?

I don't know whether prem clubs would regard him as a risk because there are certain aspects of his private life which could get him mentioned on another thread currently running.

Nuff said, wink wink, nudge nudge; know what I mean?
Thanks for that Jacko.
BTW, I thought you'd have realised by now that I'm permanently p*ssed off - that's how I acquired the tag "Board Hater".

Quiz question - How much money has Sheepshank put into Ipswich since he took over as Chairman ?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2001

Answer - Nowt - he's just brought a load of sensible business plans and common sense.

There was an interview with him the other day and he seemed so focussed and sensible. As previously said invest in youth - buy cheap and sell expensive. Its not rocket science is it ?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2001

I believe it is called "leadership" Josh.

As a counter point, it is minuted in the 2000 AGM of NUFC plc that "management will not commit to investment in the youth Academy until the future of the transfer system has been fully resolved". The Prosecution rests m'Lud.
