Lucama wreck, 1904

An interesting article appeared in the March 2001 issue of Our State, a regional-interest magazine about North Carolina. The article deals with a 1904 wreck on the ACL at Lucama between a passenger train, erroneously identified as the Champion, and a freight. The baggage car caught fire. Several days later, local citizens noticed something sparking in the ashes along the roadbed and found diamonds. Within a few days so much digging was going on along the r/w that ACL had to run people off.

Does anyone know any details of this wreck, particularly the identify of the passenger train?

The only information I have is the magazine article in Our State, March 2001 issue. It gives the year as 1904, but no month, day, or even season is listed.

Do you have a date? That would simplify a search of the microfilm newspaper at the library
