Ardmore Police Find More Explosives Police Procedures Under Scrutiny ARDMORE, Okla., 5:09 p.m. CDT April 9, 2001 -- An investigation into Friday's discovery of an explosive device in a student's pickup truck at Ardmore High School has uncovered a second bomb-type device.

Meanwhile, authorities were investigating why Ardmore police weren't immediately notified of the discovery of the explosive early Friday.

District Attorney Mitch Speer said that he'll review police reports beginning Monday.

In a statement Monday, Ardmore Superintendent Derrith Welch said that a police officer on duty on Friday was notified of the find in the truck. Welch said that school officials followed the directives of the officer.

She told Eyewitness News 5's Steve Voelker that the student's truck was searched after a drug-sniffing dog "hit" on the students truck.

Ardmore Deputy Police Chief John Beene said that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's bomb squad was called, but Ardmore police didn't learn of the incident until late Friday.

Beene said that the student was not detained and is now in the custody of his parents. He also said that the student should have been arrested "on the spot."

Beene said that officers found the second device and evidence of other explosives yesterday near the 18-year-old student's home, as well as evidence of an explosion in a sandy ravine near the teen's home.

He also said that the explosive device was given to the OHP bomb squad for disposal.

Charges could be filed against the suspect Tuesday, and then a warrant for his arrest could be issued.
