Contracts to be renewed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Warren Barton, Gary Speed, Nolberto Solano, Andy Griffin and Steve Harper.

These are the players whose contracts will be up for renewal this summer or they could leave on a free in the summer of 2002. So who is sold and who stays?

Personally I'd keep Barton, Griffin and Harper, selling Speed and Solano. This is assuming Griffin and Harper will want to stay if they continue to be fringe players.

No Sooner said than:-- from twaddletalk:-
Harper hints at Magpies exit  ^top Out-of-favour keeper Steve Harper has hinted for the first time that he may quit Newcastle United at the end of the season. The 25-year-old local lad has spent almost a decade at St James' Park and has just over a year left on his contract. But the Easington-born goalkeeper, after a battle with friend and rival Shay Given for the number one jersey, knows that he is regarded as second-choice on Tyneside now. "Newcastle is a huge club and nobody wants to leave - but my career has reached a crossroads," he said. "In a few days time I turn 26 and consequently the next contract I sign will be the most important I have ever signed. "It's a big decision, but when you reach my age you have to ask yourself whether you should be playing first team football every week." United have been linked with a move for Carlisle keeper Tony Caig but their interest in him is very much as a back-up keeper, and the Magpies, desperate to keep Harper on board, are expected to offer a hefty wage rise to keep him on Tyneside. Harper is one of five first-team regulars - the others are Warren Barton, Gary Speed, Nolberto Solano and Andy Griffin -- whose future will be mapped out in the next few weeks, with each player nearing the final year of their contracts.

Gallacher and Cordone will be leaving as well according to IC Newcastle, also on the way out will be Serrant, Hamilton and Marcellino.

Making way for a few players there!

Robson has admitted that we tred to sign Hakan Sukur as well.

Teamsqawk is only now putting that up? harper turned 26 a month ago. I hope he stays, but wouldn't surprise me if he did look elsewhere. He must be wondering if he'll ever be Newcastle's #1 after watching keeper after keeper come in and jump ahead of him in the queue.

The gist of the Teamtalk article on Harper was in The Journal this morning. It sounded to me as though he was simply trying to influence his contract negotiations - nothing wrong with that, in fact I wish him well. I doubt he's on good money compared to many others, and I'd like to see us keep him.
