Bush Approval Rating Dips on Economic Concerns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites)'s job approval rating slipped seven percentage points in the past month, partly because of growing concern about the U.S. economy, according to a CBS News poll released on Friday.

The survey of 660 adults found Bush with a 53 percent overall approval rating, compared with 60 percent a month ago.

When asked to evaluate Bush's handling of the economy, 47 percent said they approved of the job he is doing, while 40 percent gave the president a negative rating. Last month 55 percent approved of his performance in this area, compared to 28 percent who disapproved.

Although most Americans remain positive about the economy, an increasing number hold a pessimistic view, according to the poll. Sixty-eight percent believed the economy was in good shape, while 30 percent did not.

Since last December, before Bush took office, the percentage of those polled who said the economy was good has dropped nearly 20 percentage points.

The poll indicated that concerns about the economy may be leading some people to tighten the belts. Forty-one percent said they had changed their spending habits, while 58 percent said they had made few changes in the past two months.

The nationwide telephone poll, conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
