CNN Hurricane force winds move through Texas, New Mexico April 6, 2001

Web posted at: 10:04 PM EDT (0204 GMT) AMARILLO, Texas (AP) -- A vigorous line of thunderstorms complete with hurricane-force winds developed along the Texas-New Mexico border Friday leaving behind it a trail of downed power lines and roofs blown off. No injuries were reported, but wind gusts reached up to 90 mph, said Amarillo city manager Alan Taylor. By late afternoon, skies were clear as crews worked to restore power and clean up. The storm capped a day of gusty winds statewide that also moved across southern New Mexico but with no associated thunderstorms. In Artesia, New Mexico, officials canceled afternoon school bus runs because of the high winds and parents were called to pick up their children. The district has about 1,800 students. Superintendent Mike Phipps said it was hard even to stand up outdoors. The winds, reported at up to 93 mph in some areas, caused at least one tractor-trailer rig to overturn. Storms continued to move eastward with storm watches and advisories issued throughout North Texas and Oklahoma, said Jose Garcia, meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
