i believe most, maybe all, DVD player can play VCDs. i just bought some VCDs from Shenzhen, China and it has no problem in my SONY DVD players. when i tried to purchase VCDs, i went to the big stores to avoid some ilegal copy issue and to check the cover for a sign DVD. so make sure to see the DVD sign on the VCD cover. the VCDs are even much cheaper in Shenzhen than those you saw in HK. the two cities are next to each other. by the way, with the mpeg encoding card i bought from China, i burned some VCDs on both CDR and CDRW by myself. none of them works with my SONY DVD player. but they are fine on some other DVD players. this is CDR or CDRW issue. the VCDs from stores use different media and should be compatible with any DVD players. i posted CDR/CDRW question here two days ago.
