Dealers Asked To Pick Up Cars From Owners
DAYTON, Ohio, 12:21 p.m. EDT April 5, 2001 -- General Motors is urging owners of some of its new 2002 sport utility vehicles to stop driving them immediately, because the vehicles could go out of control.
The automaker plans to recall the 6,000 Chevrolet TrailBlazers, GMC Envoys and Oldsmobile Bravadas sold, because a suspension part could fail.
GM says that, so far, there have been no reports of any injuries caused by the part.
Nonetheless, the company is asking its dealers to pick up the vehicles from their owners and provide them with alternate means of transportation.
"This is preliminary and preventative. We don't know what the final fix will be at this point," said GM spokesman Mike Morrissey.
In addition, GM is idling the Moraine, Ohio, plant where the SUVs are built. The plant's cranked out about 30,000 vehicles so far.
The plant, which employs 3,000 workers, is expected to remain closed until April 16, according to GM. Employees were scheduled to get a few extra days off for Easter anyway.
