>>Soccer favourite Nolberto Solano has been arrested and charged with drink-driving, the Chronicle can reveal today. It is believed the Newcastle United and Peru winger was breath-tested and was over the limit when he was pulled up in the Gosforth area of Newcastle in the early hours of today. He was taken to Newcastle North police station, Etal Lane, Westerhope, where officers went through a set procedure for processing suspected drink-drive offenders.

A police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm a Newcastle United footballer was arrested in the Gosforth area and was taken to Etal Lane police station in the early hours. "He has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence and will appear before Newcastle magistrates on April 10." Police are not releasing details of the breath-test results or the circumstances which led to the 26-year-old star's arrest.

Solano hit the headlines recently when it was revealed he was one of the players caught up in a Government investigation into illegal EU passports. The winger has played in England for two years on the basis that he holds EU papers through a Greek grandmother. He was also involved in a controversial night out in Newcastle when he and team-mate Kieron Dyer met up with a girl who then alleged she was assaulted by another woman as she sat in Dyer's car. Solano was described by the girl and her pal as a perfect gentleman, and had gone home after drinking in the Black Bull pub in Newcastle's West End, before the alleged incident took place.

A spokeswoman for club said she could not comment further on the Solano's arrest as the player had not yet been contacted about the issue. She said: "It would be wrong of us to prejudge any court action. "However, the club does not condone drink driving in any way shape or form."

Send him down with the leeds boys I reckon....

I thought footballers didn't drink in this day and age! I thought they all just pumped themselves up on Creotine(sp?) and other stuff....

oops! italics off!

Yeah, it was the creatine hangovers that caused them to miss training the day before the game in DC last summer. Just as well a few of the supporters drank instead. Got there bright and early, no problem. ;-))

Do you think the Bill will take his passport off him?!

The international problem coupled with the passport investigation would have got BR thinking about cashing him in. I think this will be the final straw for BR. I would expect any bid of over £5 million to be accepted for him.
