Dump VCD...go DVD...see inside

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I think its high time to dump this format...it just cant deliver what people want and it will be quickly eclipsed by DVD anyway which everybody is getting players for. See attached link...dvd drive starting at $995 US...2 GB DVD-R disks expected to be between $10 and $15.

The 2GB DVD-R disc has been promoted as cheap at $15 each. A 2GB DVD- R has capacity of only 3 CD-R. For the price of one DVD-R, I can buy, 15/.25=60, as the calculation shows, 60 CD-R. Boy, I am staying with CD-R as I have more sense than dollars.

If you read the *.pdf on said site the DVD-R/RW blanks have a capacity of 4.7Gb on one side, NOT 2Gb. 4.7Gb is the accepted standard capacity of DVD on one side or layer across several DVD recordable formats. Where did this 2Gb figure come from??? That being the case it's now equivalent to more than 7 CD-Rs. And the figure of US$0.25 for a blank CD-R makes it seem this is the low-quality Princo- made ones. Higher quality Kodak Ultima cost about twice at US$0.50. Getting all these together the DVD-Rs do not come out too badly for a new format. Just compare it with how much blank CD-Rs were about five years ago. And we're only talking here about the consumer DVD-Rs Pioneer makes. I'm sure when Kodak and 3M come out with theirs prices will come down even more in the next few months.

Gentlemen. Please, let's not retire the format just yet!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that there is an artifical lower price ceiling on all DVD blanks due to royalities paid to the MPAA. I believe that this was the reason that the Chinese government sponsered the SVCD format in the first place.

Now if we could only get them to establish an MPG4 standard and build it into DVD players we would be able to fit a 2 1/2 hour movie on a $.25 (or cheaper) CDr/rw.

Anyway, media is a minor part of the process. Producing a decent video/layout is still the major issue.

And yes, there are still some folk that still swear by 8-track cassets for audio. (anybody out there that remember the origional 4- track cassets???)
