We picked a sports game because it's a genre like any other in the arcade. I'm not a fan of most sports games, personally, but I can get into the ones with non-realistic rules (NBA Jam/Hangtime/etc was fun for me). Even the ones on the Neo Geo I can pick up and play without getting bored, though I'm not sure Windjammers counts as a sports game. ;) Anyway, it would be just as wrong to eliminate sports games from the lineup as shooters or maze games or anything else, and we wanted to get as many genres as we could into the tourney in the limited rounds we have.

Cheers, Brian

Someone must be a neogeo fan, well it's a matter of taste, you can't please all anyway. My taste would be to include only very classic titles, pre 86 or so...Newer games I would leave to teenagers playing playstation or similar crap. That's what mame is for me anyway, classics, no good games in the nineties, just repetition. I hope unsquad was not the only "shooter" in this tournament, I like shmups more. Do we really want to play every game genre there is? Ok, enough moaning, decisions have been made already. Shortly put: In future, choose games that you would like to play 10 days in a row.

I don't see a problem with a sports game being picked for this round, but what I do find odd is that this is the second Neo-Geo game, and it's made by Visco again. Visco isn't exactly known for making the most... um, stellar games (Neo Drift Out was their best IMO), and even worse, there's a lot of playback problems with Visco games in general on MARP.

Secondly, Goal Goal Goal isn't exactly a good simulation of soccer. :) There are so many screwy things with this game, I don't know where to start. When you make a pass to a teammate, the pass is practically guaranteed... if you move the receiver around you'll see the ball start to zigzag in the air, it's pretty funny. And of course, you can get away with shoulder tackles all the time, maybe 1 out of 50 times they'll call a Foul (which is always a surprise). And then the person fouled gets a Free Kick that is REALLY wimpy in power. And then there's the PK shootout (although none of us will get to do that in the tourney, thankfully), where there are 9 places to shoot, so the goalie has a 1 in 9 chance of blocking it... that's just not right. The list goes on and on...

Look, I answered this in #marp already. I'm being paid off by Neo Geo and Visco! A kid's got to make a profit somehow! Heck, why do you think Puzzle de Pon is in Deca 2001?

OK, in all seriousness (yes, the above is FAKE!!!!), we wanted to cover all aspects in gaming; all genres possible, and all ages of games. We did debate other sports games instead of this (and I'm not mentioning any, as we might have others in the tournament still :) ), but goalx3 won out. The fact that both Neo Drift Out and Goal! Goal! Goal! are both Visco and Neo Geo is (or is it "are"?) completely coincidental. Any resemblance to video games living or dead are completely coincidental, must be 18 or older to play, offer void in Utah *this sentence is FAKE, btw*.

So all you complainers, you can go...um...play some soccer. It's voluntary anyway :)

Next round Track&Field, tough luck :)

I'd have to agree with BBH, Goalx3 is an awful simulation of soccer (although nowhere near as bad as Scrum Try is to rugby). If a soccer game were to be chosen, surely a Super Sidekicks game would've been better.. but gripes aside, I can't get Goalx3 to playback properly. I can't playback anyone elses recordings either through tgmame, although the #1 score on normal MARP played back fine in MAME 0.35. I've tried both dos and win tgmame, sound off and on with no luck. Any suggestions?

It's not a secret I love sports game ; so guys it's your turn : you can't imagine how I suffered in the previous round ! More seriously, I agree with BBH to say goalx3 is not very realistic, but it is maybe one of the funniest soccer to play IMO. Concerning the playback problems, anytime I RECORD and playback with sound 0 & m35tg3 (dos) it playsback correctly ; if it can help ...

Wasn't there already a sports game in this? Round 1, if I remember right.

Neo Drift Out is a racing game, and in the work with the list, we put it in the Racing genre and not Sports.
