Coal is an example of an organic sedimentary rock. It is composed of organic carbon formed from the diagenesis of swamp vegetation.The decay of once living material that has been buried.(This also gives us our fossil fuels). Page 165 in our book explains this process.

Organic rocks are formed from animals like oysters and other shelled organisms. They use inorganic carbon that they filter from the water to make their shell(calcite). These creatures are usally found in shallow warm water, over time the deposites create coral reefs made entirly of the shells of the dead animals.
