Leica SF-20 flash on Nikon TTL cameras

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I read in a previous post that a Nikon SC-17 cable will work with a Leica M6 and a Leica SF20 flash to provide off-camera flash. Just wondering, would the SF20 work on a Nikon camera with a TTL flash hotshoe? I like using the SF20 with my M6 to provide just a bit of fill-light and would like to use it on a Nikon (the new FM3a, when it comes out)if they are compatible.

Thanks in advance.

They are not compatible. They just share the same contact location.

The SF20's TTL circuitry will not operate in TTL mode on any camera other than an R8 or M6TTL, however the non-TTL-auto will work on any camera with a standard hotshoe. For the FM3A you might want to start looking around for a Nikon SB18. This is a discontinued unit about the size of an SF20, which has TTL but no AF beam (you don't need it with the FM3A of course) and so is quite compact. Although it lacks the onboard +/- compensation of the SF20, the FM3A has that feature built into the body. You should be able to pick up a mint SB18 for under $50.
