Speed Rumbler Leeching Vote

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

This is a points leeching vote. This is a five-day vote, expiring April 8 at 2359 GMT.

This involves the bomb firing leeching trick possible on the game Speed Rumbler. What happens is you'll reach, in the first stage, two lines of bombs rolling on a track. Positioned correctly, you get about 30,000 points before you have to move on because of time limits. Why is this leeching? When the level is over, you can wind up with up to 75,000 points, and with extra lives are every 70K, you can play infinatly like that. This would show a lack of skill for sure.

I move that although this leeching would be legal, you had better finish the level in the time remaining or the score is DQed. I'll also do 80,000 point penalties / life where this occurs - that's up to you. And heck... you can say allow the leeching :)

All in favor will signify by saying "aye". All opposed will signify by saying "no". Of course, you can add debate to your vote.

Thanks for your attention. GB9

Aye that it should be banned. It's a cheesy way to rack up points, and if somebody with skill uploads for this game it's going to be a lot harder for them to beat a leeching score (300K is about one loop through the game).

Eye. it's easy to spot this leeching too, if you see the throttled playback stop in one spot firing off the things that come across the conveyer belts, it's leecher time.

Aye.

I debated about whether to upload those files, and decided that I ought to, seeing as how the current first place scores were acheived by repeating Level One as many times as the player could (which is points leeching in my book).

If repeating Level One constantly is only "frowned upon" and not yet banned, I would suggest that practice also be banned, by the way.

DEBATE (even tho I am voting Aye): Skill is required for this leeching to reach the 70,000 point mark. Sitting in front of the bombs only nabs me 30,000 points a life, meaning 40,000 points must come from *skill*. The bombs are fatal at the slightest touch, by the way, so there is always the possibility of instant death when attempting the manuever, too. The section is protected by an indestructible gun (hard to avoid)on both the entry and exit, which also is a single-touch fatality.

Also, is it alright to do the trick if I only gross 69,900 points per life? I would suggest that sitting in one area for more than 10 seconds be banned, as well as the repeating of levels (by way of letting the time run out).

I am new to MARP and appreciate it immensely. All of the fond memories of trying to acheive a higher score on all my favorite games have come back to me. My wife doesn't appreciate it tho.

It is possible that both of these leeching techniques could become general rules at MARP. Be aware that for tournaments, these are strictly enforced!! More specifically, a player must make every attempt to proceed through the game (i.e. no hanging around) and furthermore no deliberate attempts of repeating levels. In prior tournaments, I have repeatedly seen both and the INPs were immediately DQ'ed. Kung Fu Master is a great example where both tecniques are possible within the game. (#1) Level 1--slowly karate your way to almost the end but avoid the "boss", purposely dying before advancing to level 2. In effect you're repeating Level 1. (#2) At the beginning of level 2 you can hang around in one area and rack up huge bonuses by waiting for objects/enemies to appear and refusing to move forward.

The main reason why it is difficult to enforce these rules at regular MARP is because confirmers are only checking for proper playback to the claimed score--they are not looking for points leeching.

well, so I'm leeching in momoko 120% game, if I'm proceeding slowly through level to maximize points (I could get to L2 probably 5 times faster, but with 1/3 of points, or so) ? hm. I don't like to be marked as leecher, but actually I'm playing it exactly the same way as in arcade, or probably even better, because at arcade we were usually running like hell to the top of level, and than we were there waiting the remainning time and maximizing score. I do believe, that Momoko is not very "lucky" choice for MARP site, as many other games, where leeching is so easy. (like slow moving forward in commando will bring you bigger score too, etc...) ... what you do think about these games, how should be played for MARP ? I don't see any reasonable solution. (until we will play for best time and not score, what's nonsense ;)) (sorry for posting this here into Speed rumbler Q, but I'm curious about this all)
