Far east trip - off

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

NEWCASTLE United have scrapped plans for an end-of-season trip to the Far East.

Gazette Sport can reveal that the Magpies were set to play friendlies in China and Hong Kong in June. But those plans have now been scrapped, largely because Newcastle could give no guarantees about being able to field star-studded line-ups. I understand United were going to jet out of the north east on May 21 - two days after the season ends with a home fixture with Aston Villa. Newcastle were due to play in Beijing and Hong Kong on June 2 and 6 respectively. But the visit was always in jeopardy once it became clear star names like Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer would be missing as they recover from respective long-term knee and shin injuries - and United's international brigade would also be absent because of World Cup qualifying matches.

I think the proposed tour will be off just incase we get into the intertoto cup. The players will now have a wel deserved rest at the end of the season, as next season may have to start a week or two earlier.

Dyer not going, Shearer not going. The communist regime only allow certain teams into the country and without these two it would never happen.

The Chinese dictatorship also control all merchandising in the coutry so there would be little gain in sending a side there in the first place.

Don't you have to play in red to go to the far east these days?

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2001

Been there (~100 times), lived there, got LOTS of T-shirts!: "The Chinese dictatorship also control all merchandising in the coutry(sic)"

what a load of absolute BOLLOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Where the 'f' did you get that garbage from???

IC Newcastle. Sorry I forgot the link, perhaps you'd be 'wiser' to vent your anger at them?

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2001

"The people who would run the tour are government travel agents and Newcastle would be expected to comply with their wishes.

"Recently the powers that be have been fairly strict when it comes to admitting foreign football players to the country and they would expect a strong squad to come over if the tour was to go ahead at all." It would appear that the strength of United's proposed squad is a major stumbling block with Alan Shearer likely to stay at home to continue his rehabilitation and the likes of Shay Given, Gary Speed and Aaron Hughes set to follow suit with World Cup qualifiers on the horizon.

Any hopes that the Magpies may benefit financially from a tour of China would appear to be unfounded as the government controls any marketing of merchandise within the country and retains any profits.

I'm not angry mate, I'm just pointing out the facts - you can believe any $hite you read! If you think I'm bul$hitting you,I'll meet you in Beijing or Shanghai (or any major Chinese city for that matter) - you prove me wrong and I'll pay for your flights / hotels / drinks (and even girls, if you happen to like them?)

Don't try to take the pi$$ out of me mate ("wiser"), I certainly am wiser; I've been doing business in China since 1979! I was last there 3 f'ing days ago!

Point made? Then don't even bother to apologise.

:-((

I did believe what I read and I believe your viewpoint as well. There is/was no need to get to fucking uptight about it mate, you could have simply relayed the facts as you see them and I'd be better informed to make the judgement.

I posted the article so you could see it was not purely my opinion but you seem to think I posted it to start an argument, which you've done very well at yourself.

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2001

I'm impressed rik, you're obviously an expert on China (and boxing), just like what I am:

Box·er (bok?s?r) noun A member of a secret society in China that unsuccessfully attempted in 1900 to drive foreigners from the country by violence and force Chinese Christians to renounce their religion. [Approximate translation of Chinese (Mandarin) yâ hé quán, righteous harmonious fists, alteration of yâ hé tuán, righteous harmonious society : yâ, righteous + hé, harmonious + tuán, society.]

You're right this is fun!

Good on yer mate.

I strongly suspect that I know more about Northampton (I think I've been there 2ce. or 3ce.), than you do about China?

What's wrong with a bit of banter on a Tuesday morning (or evening, in my case).

Come back LR, all is forgiven...

How do you swear in mandarin?

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2001

You're better off trying to swear in a double bass, it's bigger than a mandolin and it sounds better!

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2001

After reading the following.

Boxers (box-?ers) noun Underpants with legs in.[Australian trans.= Daks]

Nowt!!
