Frankenstein (or the Modern Prometheus) -- Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Mary Shelley's use of language somehow perfectly describes the human ability (or need?) to maintain a sense of wonder and an awe of world's beauty in the face of great suffering, cruelty, and loss. If for no other reason, read this book for the beauty of her writing! Its stunning.
