P-300 for US

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi,

I am in the market for the slide projectors and have been looking forward to get a decent projecter in mid-budget range. I am interested in Leica P300 with a super colorplan lens, but unfortunately P300 is not available in US market( That's what was told to me by Leica Customer Service.)

I would be interested to know if someone know a place to get a P300IR in US? Also, if some one is using the same here, can you tell me if it can be used on 110V power supply?

Thanks, Amit Verma

Try Delta International (www.deltainternational.com). They say on their website that they'll get whatever you want. There should be an e-mail address and/or telephone# on the website. The issue with the P300 (and P150 for that matter) in the US is the near-universal dominance of the Kodak Carousel tray format. As someone who gives lecture/slideshows, I have yet to find a venue that had anything else in their A/V stable. If I had my slides in European trays I'd need to drag my own projector and a backup as well. For home use, it's a different story but there too, the occasion arises where someone wants to show their slides at another location and if anything, they'll be a Carousel available. I am not sure if the new rotary- tray Leica projectors are Carousel compatible, but if so then they would make more sense to me, at least in the US.

The preponderence of the carousel trays is curious. It takes up a great deal more room and is much more expensive. Give me the good old straight trays everytime. If you want to have straight trays that do not allow the slides to fall out then the LKMs work well.

The problem of Kodak dominance can be taken care of by just buying a round tray, and taking it to other slide shows. The problem is that with Kodak is the lens, the navitar is very expensive, and schnieder is not making the lens I want ( 90mm f2.8 cinelux). And the feedback of Leica SuperColor plan lens is just too good, esp for its price as compared with navitars.

Any other suggestions about the other possible options are really welcome.

Thanks for your help, Amit Verma

I have a P300IR and I recommend it highly. I am in Canada and it was supplied as CSA approved and 120v. BTW Kodak makes the RT-s and Rt-m projectors for Leica.

The problem I always had with straight trays was the tendency for the feeder arm (the part that pushed the slide into the gate) to skim alongside a cardboard-mounted slide instead of striking it squarely. Plastic mounts, being slightly thicker, were no problem. The Carousels are a gravity-feed, and that never seems to happen. The other advantage of a round tray of course is not needing to reload the tray if you set the timer and run a continuous show. For me the thought of transfering slides from straight to round trays before a presentation and then back again is horrifying, as I am usually screening anywhere from 80-120 80-slide trays during a 2-day seminar.

John, can you tell me from where you bought the projector? Does it take the round trays also?

Do you face the same problem as mentioned by Jay with the straight trays?

Jay, since I am not familiar with either of the projectors, please excuse my inexperience. You said, that there is a tendency in the straight trays to skim alongside the cardboard mounted slides. Now, in the Kodak projectors, even though the feed is gravity, the slides are taken out against the gravity. This situation is most likely to produce the slip than the one with straight tray projectors. Or is there some design difference that would not let this happen? Can you please explain it to me?

Thanks, Amit Verma

I have never found the cardboard mounts to be skimmed by the feeder arm on my CA2502 or P2000 UNLESS I forget to click the yellow button into the non-LKM position when using non LKM trays.
