SEADOG ON TRIAL AT ST JAMES'

Scarborough have told Newcastle to make them an offer for French youngster Romain Faure.

The utility player was on trial at St James' Park last month and has also spent time with Blackburn Rovers, but Seadogs boss Neil Thompson has told Bobby Robson to come up with the cash to make the move permanent.

Thompson said: "Newcastle want to have another look before committing themselves. If they come up with an offer that is right for us and right for the player we wouldn't stand in their way."

Any move would not happen until the summer, Conference outfit Scarborough would want a six-figure fee for Faure, who has caught the eye this term with his performances in midfield and at sweeper.

Newcastle's north east rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough are also tracking Faure, but Robson's interest may heighten after he missed out on another Scarborough prospect Ashley Lyth.

Robson had been monitoring the 17-year-old defender but missed out when Peter Taylor's Leicester City side swooped with a £100,000 signing - that could eventuallty rise to £250,000.

"Utility player".........isn't that how they used to describe Kenny Mitchell?

My schoolmates and I always took the term "utility player" to mean "crap". This was at a time in the 60's when Newcastle were constantly swooping for another "utility player".
