The assholes won, I guess.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Gwen's Trailer Trash Forum : One Thread

Hi, y'all.

The crappy thing about Greenspun is that I can't actually ban posters. Did I fool y'all for a while? Did y'all think I could?

The IP people who matched the trolls' IPs were Marisa (MAKADA@aol.com) and DisneyJen (can't remember her e-mail address off hand.) I e-mailed Marisa and asked her if she was trolling and if so, why. She claimed she wasn't the one doing it. She said that Susan Walsh (svwalsh@whatever.com -- the "witch hunt" chick) could vouch for her. She also sent me her alleged home phone number and invited me to call her and "verify" that she was who she claimed to be. I declined.

The most annoying part of this whole situation was that I had been thinking about getting rid of the forum, anyway. I felt bad that I hadn't been devoting much time to it. Then these fuckrods showed up and I felt that I had to fight the good fight. But now I'm just tired.

Nothing they said even hurt my feelings. It was wearying, though, to come home from work and imagine that I was going to relax for a while by reading my forum. Then my adrenaline would rush as I read the bullshit and thought of ugly things to say in return and then decided not to say them so that I could look mature. In short, it wasn't very relaxing at all.

I really do have enough stuff to worry about without worrying about what some asshole wants to accuse me of next. So I just put a password on the forum. Maybe later I'll get a better forum... maybe not, though. I'm too busy to mess with that stuff now.

I'm afraid that this one will stagnate in its seclusion. But I don't want to just get rid of it altogether.

If you're reading this, it's because I'm not so paranoid that I've decided not to give you the password. Congratulations, I guess.

I'm glad you didn't fall prey to the trolls, Gwen. I think the password is a great way to keep them out and keep your forum going. Thanks for not taking it down.

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

I'm glad you didn't take them down either, Gwen. But I would have understood if you did. Who needs this shit?

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

I'm glad you did what you did, Gwen. This way we can stay the little clique everyone complains about.

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

Shit I haven't been on the forums in a long while. I'm glad you sent me the password cause it reminded me to take a few minutes from working once and a while in order to converse with other humans. I kind of got sucked into work.

I'm sorry to hear that there's been badness going on while I was away. I don't know what happened but if part of their problem was that they thought your forum is too cliquey (which I don't thnk is the case) well... They're YOUR forums. If they don't like it they can go start their own.

No, no. They didn't win!! There is some theory out there that relates to how hot air or cold air (can't remember which) will flow from an area where it is greater to an area where it is less unless there is some force that prevents it. Well if it is too hot or too cold in your area you want that flow to happen. If that flow doesn't happen then the area with less hot or cold air always wants to come to the area that has more. That can be good because others can have a positive contribution. It can also be bad because others can end up doing nothing except using up the desriable air. The point is Gwentown is a desirable place for desirable people. The undesirables will always want to infiltrate. We can fight them off through combative posting and I must say, the people here are great at that. Nicole and Shelly kick some serious undesirable ass. But like you pointed out, why waste the energy. It becomes taxing and irritating and then the fun goes away. The password was a way to keep the desirable area positive for the desirable people. You won and you deserve it! Gwentown lives on! Gwen rules! I think I rule too!! Ha!

They didn't win. You just chose to kick them out of your living room for peeing in your potted plants. That's called setting boundaries.

Now the party can continue until someone else wants to throw the bean dip around the room or wear your Sanrio lampshades on their head (without asking permission first).

Way to be proactive or something, Gwen. I don't actually know how to use proactive in a sentence. Anyway, I hope the forum doesn't die. I hope that you go with another forum though because I like to be able to edit my posts.

The upshot to all of this is, maybe the Marijuana thread will finally die.

Hee! Sorry. I'm putting that one to bed now.

Welcome back, GForce!

Gwen, I appreciate the password protection. It's unfortunate that the forum came to this, but I believe, if we all wanted the forum to continue, that such a move was inevitable. The gates were open and they could never be closed again simply by arguing with the trolls or, better, ignoring them altogether. So thanks for keeping it going Gwen. And now that the trolls are locked out I think you will find it relaxing and enjoyable once again.

Yeah for Gwen (((((Gwen))))). My sanctuary is back. Wow, I am surprised at who it was. What an interesting ending to a mystery story. Howdy y'all!!! Let's party!!!!

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

Wait--you mean that it was JUST Marisa, DisneyJen and Susan Walsh?!

*boggle*

That IS a surprise.

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

Word, Milla. I was convinced it was... Well, you know. Not to mention any names and bring the tone down.

And you won, Gwen. You get to be you and they have to be them. They'll always be victims.

Rock on!

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

Gwen, thanks for not closing this down (oh, and letting me have a password...yippee!)

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

I'm happy if y'all are happy.

And, no, no, no... See, it started out with "new1" using two different IPs, both of which mapped to AOL and neither of which mapped those of anyone we knew. Then, the other day, there were five different IPs posting the bullshit. Two of the new ones matched the IPs used by Marisa and DisneyJeni or whoever.

And I'd prefer not to know if Marisa was saying some of that stuff. She always seemed nice. If it *was* her, she missed out on the opportunity to tell me shit "to my face" in e-mail, so whatever.

All those people were lame, and I don't care anymore.

-- Anonymous, March 29, 2001

I'm glad the forum is still going and that I'm here but ... does this mean floosie won't be with us anymore? I'll miss her.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Tell you what--we can all draw straws. Whoever wins gets to be floosie for a week. Don't worry! Typing with your face is not a prerequisite!

Anyway, I bet floosie will be back.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Gwen, I'm sorry you had to put up with all that cr@p. No one needs that. Some people just suck.

I'm glad this forum's still here, 'cause you guys are fun.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Drat! I was trying to be playful, and I think it doesn't come off like that when I re-read it. Sorry! Sorry! *feels bad*

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Okay, maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought Floosie was portrayed by Bubba (except for the fake Floosies, of course). Maybe I'm giving him too much credit... :-)

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

NO WAY!! floosie rules. Bubba is an asshole!!!

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

I always thought Gwen was floosie.

Will the real floosie please stand up?

Or not, because it's fun to read her, and knowing who she might be will totally ruin the illusion for me.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

I always thought floosie was a real person!

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Me too, since we exchanged a few emails!

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

I'm glad you said that, Keli! A lot of people gave her grief for the way she is! She totally cracks me up and reminds me not to take things too seriously.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Crap. Hit submit too soon. I forgot to add that she had mentioned awhile back that she was having computer problems, so that may be why she hasn't been around.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

I can't believe y'all thought I was Floosie. No... And neither was Bubba. I thought about sending her the password, but I couldn't find her address in my sorry excuse for an Outlook Explorer address book. I'll have to wait and see if she writes to me.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Hang in there Gwen. I think you made a good decision.

-- Anonymous, March 30, 2001

Isn't Floosie's address on all the messages she posted or on the statistics page?

-- Anonymous, March 31, 2001

Oh, shit. Yeah, it is.

I went through about two topics, copying e-mail addresses and sending those people the password. Then something distracted me and I quit. Bleh. I need to go do that some more.

I feel bad coz people are writing to ask for the password and I don't recognize their names immediately and I sit there and wonder, "Would the trolls have the nerve to ask for the password? Hmm."

-- Anonymous, March 31, 2001

Hey Gwen, thanks for sending me the password. I don't check in here as often as I ought.

Because I suck, mainly.

I'm glad that you're around and I'm glad you kept the forums and I'm esp. glad that you write the diary.

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2001

I am just happy I can get into the forum again...I did work all day on Friday, and that wasn't nearly as much fun as thinking about my favorite song or foods I can't cook. I like my Gwentown breaks!

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2001

How can the assholes have won when Gwen got so much comedy gold out of it? I loved the entry on the trolls.

-- Anonymous, April 04, 2001

Let me add my thanks to Gwen for passwording me. I'm sure I was one that was looked at, as I'm a committed lurker.

It's hard for me to believe there are people who troll for the fun of it, but I guess they do. I love the "other people have said this, so it's ok for me to trash Gwen". Um, no, you planned to say this as a childish attack. Password protecting the forum is like locking your door and screening your calls. But, I would be prepared to have to change the password. I'm sure a troll would not hesitate to ask for a password.

Gwen, don't give up on the forum. Even if you don't feel like you're devoting enough time here, people who like you and your work like being here together. Any trolls who try to invade just recognize a good thing, and want to tear it down.

-- Anonymous, April 04, 2001

Me too, Gwen, thanks. I just realized I sent you the email from my husband's email address rather than my own. (Mnandry@aol.com). Sorry. I'm not a troll. Anyway, Shelly knows where I live and could drive over to my house and kick my ass. And she'd do it too, I bet. She's psycho.

I'm glad I still get to play. :)

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2001

Gwen, one of two most recent trolls over at 3WA had an AOL IP. Of course, roughly 70% of our late night trolls do, but I firmly believe that the vast majority of them are the same person.

You might want to look into Bravenet for a free forum. I believe you can block IPs there.

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2001

Thanks for sending my password so fast today. But I feel bad that you didn't recognise me when I sent for it last week. (sniff, sniff, pity party!) I was going through serious withdrawal and actual had to work last week to kill time.

-- Anonymous, April 10, 2001

Thanks Gwen, and thanks OmaD for being so sweet and letting me know what was going on. I never quite feel like I'm sure of what's up online, and I feel like such a tool having to ask,"Uh, what's a troll?" or "How do I make a table again?".

Now I'm going to catch up on everything that I missed.

-- Anonymous, April 10, 2001

I didn't ask for the password til today. partly because I figured that Gwen would go through and send emails to all the legit posters and I would've gotten one then. Doh! But then I figured I'd take a chance and email. I was a little nervous til I got a response because I don't really understand the IP thing totally either, and yikes, what if I matched the bad IP???? For what it's worth, I missed the forum for the last couple of weeks. I don't think it'll stagnate at all. If anything, I haven't posted as much recently, just because I wanted to ignore/avoid the weird stuff that was going on. Now it's all okay. Incidentally, someone posted on Hissyfit about what was happening with Gwentown. I mentioned something weird was going on and was told by the moderator I shouldn't talk about it there. Bad me. (i'm not being sarcastic, I just didn't know I shouldn't and felt like a tool).

-- Anonymous, April 10, 2001

Oma -- I got a million requests at once and I didn't see yours til after you'd sent the second one.

Gardanna - that's weird. I haven't been to HF in a million years. I can't believe, though, that they didn't want to have a topic about my forum. Damn reader hoggers...

Just kidding. Love you, Tara!

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

It's OK Gwen, I figured as much so just sent the other in case I got lost in the traffic jam. I also had problems sending for some reason so wasn't too sure it really got to you. My work e-mail sends a confirmation message so I was sure of that one.

-- Anonymous, April 11, 2001

I'm so glad the assholios didn't win. I missed you guys! I hope floosie comes back, also the chick from Pittsburg -- I liked her. You know what surprises me? I thought the trolls were male. Now, it looks like there is no telling if Marissa and Disney Jen were really trolling or not -- but if it was them, what kind of sexist am I? (That was a rhetorical question.) Gwen, thanks for hanging in there. I think you have NO idea what a difference you make in people's days. You are a cyber-goddess. Or at least really bitchin'.
