How bad is the Scottish League?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

One thing we ALWAYS discuss in Sweden when it's time for the national team to play is how good the scottish leagie is. Like you know Henrik Larsson plays in Celtic and scores a LOT of goals, 47 so far this season. But now many in the national team.

So how good is really the scottish league compared to the english and other european leagues.

If Celtic and Rangers were in the English PL they would be in mid table. All the rest of the SPL teams would struggle in our first division.

Below the top two it is appalling. The best way of judging it is how they do in Europe. Aberdeen lost to Boehemians from Ireland this year, and in previous years there have been defeats by teams from Finland and the like.

Rangers and Celtic do have decent sides but not seemingly in the same season. Larsson looks out of this world, and up until this season you'd have to say anyone half decent coming from England looked world class in Scotland. Even some appalling players from England have looked good, like Vega and Sutton. The problem with the argument has been the performances of Di Canio, Viduka and Jonatan Johannson this season. Viduka looked great up here but has looked good in England. Johansson looked okay up here but has done exceptionally well for Charlton.

The top two will always be Rangers and Celtic, there will always be a team challenge for thrid then drop away, this year it is Hibs, last year Killie, previous yeats Hearts, Motherwell, Aberdeen.

I live in Dunfermline who should be about 8th every year, and generally hit that. They don't have anyone under the age of 34 that anyone has ever heard of. They haven't spent more than £150,000 on a player in living memory. That they have managed to reach 6th this year is amazing, but also a sad indictment on the rest of the division.

I'd guess if you wanted to rank the league then it is probably a bit like Belgium.

Rik

in absolute terms you may be right, but the unknown in it all would be the way the damn Scots up their effort against everything English. As Buff has mentioned in his search for Celts for his team, they are fundamentally a bunch of hard bastards looking for a fight. Show them some puffy London based footballers and they'd kill them. The year Rangers have been hopeless but they've been knocked out by injuries evern worse than ours. We have no one to compare with Mols, nor Barry Ferguson, nor Larsson, not Thompson so they're probably better than us. But that doesn't make them anything special.

A de Boer brother or a Claudiou Reyna or a Giovanni van Bronckhorst would look good, mind. I hear van Bronckhorst might be available.
