Who can take over the OREAD newsletter?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

It is time for someone else to take over the OREAD newsletter. I have been editing/writing it for a few years. It is time for a change.

The newsletter ought to come out about once a month (I've missed a few months in the last year or so). The newsletter ought to include any upcoming events and important club news.

It is not a lot of work. But, it is important for the club and it would be great if someone else will take it over.

Is anyone interested in becoming the editor?

What qualities might a good OREAD editor possess? Or, for that matter, what qualities might a good OREAD editor not possess?

I think the best way to answer these questions is to think about what The OREAD should be. I think the OREAD ought to be issued regularly (monthly is about right); include any and all local events of interest (orienteering, runs, biking, adventure races, club meetings, etc); and keep OKers up-to-date on important club news (like Mook winning the US Short and Long Champs).

I think the most important thing is to have a regular newsletter. It doesn't really matter what is in it, as long as it gets sent on a regular basis.

I think it is time for a new editor for a couple of reasons. First, I've grown tired of it. It is not like it takes a lot of effort. It is just that I don't feel interested in writing it anymore. Second, I've been editing the OREAD for a couple of years. That is enough. A new editor would bring some new ideas. New ideas are always good.

If anyone out there is thinking about becoming OREAD editor, I can tell you it doesn't take a lot of work and it is, at least some times, satisfying. I can usually write an issue in maybe 10-15 minutes. I spend about 10-15 minutes each month managing the list of email addresses (adding new names or removing names when emails are bounced back). I usually get a few messages a year from people who are replying to something in an issue or just saying "thanks" for putting out the information. I've never had a complaint.

Editing the OREAD is a good thing to do for the club. It isn't a lot of work and it can be fun. If you're interested in trying it, drop me a note (meglin@juno.com).

Suffice it to say, the lack of an OREAD for this month so far has been noted.
