Bishop Young Tours Charges of the Tenth

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Tenth District - AMEC : One Thread

Adhering to a promise he made during the Annual Conference series and earlier meetings this year, Bishop McKinley Young (109) has taken the month of March to tour the seven annual conferences of the Tenth Episcopal District. Please tell us of his visit to your church.

Bishop Young and his party completed his tour of the North Presiding Elder's District on Monday, April 9 concluding at Ebenezer AME Church in Paris Texas. The tour comprised three days of intense activity and travel. The North District extends from Dalls on the West to Arkansas and Louisana in the east. And from Denison or Oklahoma on the North to Palmer Texas in the South. This is perhaps the largest single PE District in the State. Bishop Youg was well received by all of the churches, preaching at Hamilton Memorial in Texarkana (Rev. John Holmes, Pastor) on Sat, April 7 at 6:00 PM and Ward Chapel in Marshall, Texas on Palm Sunday where the pastor is Rev. Mittie Muse. From Marshall, we continued to Bethel in Longview and on the Kaufman County area where we visited St. James in Terrell, Allen Chapel in Forney, Macedonia in Kaufman and Ayers Chapel in Rand Texas. Then on to the southern end of the district in Palmer Texas. The tripr resumed on Monday when we went North to Quinn Chapel in Denison, Payne Chapel in Shermnan, then on to Bonham and Paris. Returning to Dallas from Paris, Bishop Young began planning for his trip through the South District. Blessings,

Pastor Paris

Congratulations to Bro. Jerryl for his efforts in starting the dialogue for th Bishop's tour of the charges in Texas. It is my prayer that someone along the way (each conference) will contribute to this. Perhaps a member of the FITMR Committee in each conference will step up to the plate and be sure that the info for their conference is included in this historic event.

This is a re-post with the HTML fixed. Ahh, haste...
On Monday March 26, Bishop McKinley Young (109) rose at 5 AM, flying into Houston to start a three-day trek through the 53 charges of the Texas Annual Conference. Spanning the southeastern corner of the state from Ratliffe to Centerville to Rosenberg to Angleton to Port Arthur, Bishop Young's first day was spent as the guest of the presiding elder of the South Houston District, James H. Phillips III. Bishop Young met with Mayor Lee Brown along the way, and managed to see thirteen churches in a grueling day that ended at Reedy Chapel Galveston (the Mother Church of Texas), from which he departed at 11:30 PM.

While at Reedy, Bishop Young toured the entire physical plant, guided by recently appointed pastor Brenda Payne. Bishop Young noted the intricate handiwork of the chandeliers, the stained glass windows, and paused to enjoy a selection on the historic Hook-Hastings Organ. During his few minutes at Reedy Bishop Young offered words of encouragement from his own experience as pastor of a historic charge, Big Bethel Atlanta. Pastor Payne guided Bishop Young through the archives of Reedy Chapel, showed all the landmark designations, and concluded in the fellowship room on the first floor of the old parsonage.

Bishop Young followed the pattern he had performed at each charge, leading us in a verse of "Blessed Assurance", praying for the charge, and asking for a scripture reading from the Pastor.

Upon conclusion and with the clock approaching midnight, Bishop Young bade farewell and God's Speed as he left for the second day of his tour of the Texas Annual Conference. On Tuesday, Bishop Young will spend his time in the city of Houston, first touring the South Houston District churches there, then concluding with the Houston District churches based in or near the city. Wednesday Presiding Elder Johnny Jennings will be Bishop Young's host as they cover the outlying portions of the Houston District.

Many thanks to Rev. Arthur Ferguson, pastor of Clear Lake, who chauffeured the Bishop and Elder throughout the day.
