Why are you using Mpeg-2? The ATI card you have is capable of producing VERY nice raw Mpeg-1 (VCD) or mpeg-2 (SVCD). You only need to post process the raw mpeg to correct the internal system multiplex rate and pack sizing.

My web site has samples of such VCD and SVCD video captured with the ATI AIW 128 card. Also theirs a link from that site to my old web site that has more detailed information on how to use the ATI AIW cards to capture VCD and SVCD and how to make the resultant captures compliant so they'll load into your authoring software.

Check out www.pcphotovideo.com (where the samples are) and while there look for the link to the old web site. I'm sure you'll find a lot of ideas there.

Opps .. a quick follow up. Sorry I just realized you were talking about the ATI "Radeon". My card is the older Rage 128. There are substantial differences, as the Radeon and it's drivers (AFAIK) is only capable of capturing using the DirectX DirectShow capture. However, most of the information on my web site, might still be applicable. In "my" setup, I'm using the Windows 2000 ATI media setup which also uses DirectShow capture.

Also, I'm over here on the "other side of the pond" in NTSC land. You'll have to keep in mind the NTSC vs PAL format when reading my stuff. FWIW, I've been burning darn near DVD quality SVCDs for several months. The ATI profile for 480x480 MPEG-2 with variable bit rate selected at 2.4 Mb/s makes for VERY nice SVCD discs.

And here in the states, a one hour TV show with the commercial content edited out, equates to about 43 minutes. That (at the above listed SVCD parameters) makes a video clip just under 800 Mb which will fit nicely on an 80 minute CDR disc. ( when dealing with SVCD video, although the windows file size shows 800 mb, the video/audio content will fit on a 700 mb disc because of the disc mode of writing etc) I have a very nice collection of my favorite SciFi series. It CAN be done.

Thanks Rich!

you mentioned you used windows 2000. i have windows2k running alongside windows 98. shall i try installing drivers for the card and then capturing it in windows 2000? would this help?

Thanks

i just purchased that ati all in wonder 32 mb ddr and the way i capture it is have it on vcd quality. once you set it to vcd quality it will save the video file under mpeg1 format. then i use roxio's easy cd creator 5 to burn it on cdr. hope that helps.
